Greetings All,
Schaefer Brewery has bought out Heileman Brewery and moved into their Bedford NY building. As everyone knows "Schaeffer is the one beer to have when having more than one"!
The project seeds were sown by the 50' Lionel Schaefer reefer that I bought several years ago at my LHS and the 40' Schaefer reefer that was a gift from 1:1 Sir Neal.
Local beer drinkers couldn't be more excited.
The final push for this project was provided by a friend who returned from a trip to Connecticut with two 30 packs of Schaefer for yours truly knowing it's my favorite beer. That's a friend!!!
Or more envious of engineer Robert R who will be switching out the Schaefer Brewery while working the Bedford Turn today. Word is that Schaefer is giving out free beer this week to their wholesale customers, suppliers and the trainmen who make it all possible.
Look for the new Schaefer Brewery in the upcoming Penn Central Car Movements #78. That NYC Hi-Cube will be going to Reynolds Beverage in Kings Port NY with a load of tall necks. And listen for the new guys singing the Schaefer Jingle!
The F.M. Schaefer Brewery, located at 435 Kent Ave in Brooklyn NY from 1916 to 1976, closed down citing high costs of taxes, municipal services and utilities. The Rheingold Brewery cited the same reasons for closing it's NY brewery operations a week earlier. Before closing Schaefer was the last New York City based brewery in operation. Other Schaefer Breweries continued the brewing and distribution. From this 01/23/1976 NY Times article.
Thanks for reading!!!
See ya soon!!!
Nice work on the acquisition Sir John! I know that Shop Rite will carry Schaefer Beer in their stores!
ReplyDeleteThank you Sir Neal!!! The Schaefer folks are counting on ShopRite to order early and often!!
DeleteThe Schaefer cars have a home on the N.Y.C.T.L.! Oh my gosh! I remember that 1972 TV spot! Sad that the breweries could no longer make a go of it in NYC. But, at least Scahefer brews, bottles, and ships beer by rail in Empire City!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ralph!!! Sadly the high taxes, utilities and municipal service costs forced many an industry out of the five boroughs. The NYCTL Chamber of Commerce is glad to have them settle here!
DeleteCongrats to you for Shaefer Beer moving to bedford, NY! Nice new sign you installed! A few years back, I saw a ho layout online where the guy mounted a large beer (can't remember the brand) sign on the wall above his ho brewery. I thought it was rather neat. I'll try to find it. Have a good evening!
ReplyDeleteThanks Robert!!! Please let me know if you find the beer sign brewery. If I can find 24 oz cans of Schaefer I think they would make for some good looking silos. An upstate NY brewery had their silos painted as beer cans and it looked cool.
