Penn Central Car Movements #74 / NYCTL Part 3

Greetings All,

Welcome back to Penn Central Car Movements #74!!

We conclude the outbound portion our Penn Central three layout virtual op today fifty years to the day the Penn Central declared bankruptcy and became the largest corporate failure in history at that time.*

Like the 1:1 trainmen of the Penn Central the 1:87 trainmen on our layouts continue to do their jobs to the best of their abilities and the freight will keep moving as we interchange virtual ops freight cars with 1:1 Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific RR and
PC Ralph's Kings Port Division

We open up at the very busy Empire Belt RR's North Side Yard in Empire City, NY with the E.B.R.R. guys preparing for 1/87th scale PC Ralph to bring Train EB-4 to the Penn Central Terminal Yard in Bedford NY.
Train EB-4 eases out of the yard passing Hohman Ave.

EBRR Train EB-4 heads to Terminal Yard

1/87th scale PC Ralph brings EB-4 into Terminal Yard and turns the rest of the outbound portion of the op over to the Penn Central.
PC U23C #6718 is once again handling the yard duties in Terminal Yard and gets to work on the EB-4 freight cars.
A seven car cut going to the A.P.R.R.s Rock Ridge Yard is shoved into track #1.
Freight cars for K.P.D.s West Mill Yard get blocked in track #3.
A trio of AP covered hoppers get shoved towards the Pier 16 yard.
The AP covered hoppers are spotted at the Pier 16 Grain Silos holding track for their next P.C.C.M. loads.
Yard engine 6718 is at Terminal Warehouse & Cold Storage pulling six 57' reefers loaded with frozen food for C&P Restaurant Supply and a 50' PC boxcar loaded with bulk paper for Marcal Industries. Both consignees are located in Rock Ridge NJ.
A Pier 16 yard switcher is at Bruce Electric Equipment and pulls this NYC Hi cube boxcar loaded with wire and cables for I.B.M. in Binghamton NY.
The 6718 picks up the NYC hi cube for delivery to the West Mill train. Outbound Extra 1644 is idling on track 8A.
A little bit later the 6718 is in the engine terminal area pulling two PC gondolas loaded with scrap metal for Kings Port Steel.
With the train building getting close to completion we catch the first train out of Terminal Yard getting ready for departure. Extra 1644 will terminate at Selkirk. NYC RR Hudson Division timetable #22 mandates that pulpwood / saw log cars must not be in Symbol Trains, must not exceed 25 MPH on tangent tracks and 15 MPH on curves.

* On June 21st at 11:00 AM ten of the twelve Penn Central Board Members met with CEO / President Paul Gorman and others in the board room at Penn Center Plaza. After discussing annual salaries for nine vice presidents and disposing of the officers salaries and pension benefits the board finally turned to the question of survival.

At approximately 5:00 PM Mr Gorman was called out of the board room to take a telephone call from the Secretary of Transportation. When he returned with the news that no loans would be forthcoming the board authorized the filing for a voluntary reorganization under Section 77 of the Bankruptcy Act.

At 5:40 PM, June 21, 1970 Judge Kraft signed the order at his home and the Penn Central had officially collapsed...

Information obtained from the book "The Wreck of the Penn Central" by Joseph R. Daughen and Peter Binzen.

Thanks for reading and watching!!!
See ya soon!!!

Acknowledge arrival of EB-4 at Terminal Yard with cars for the KPD, and the dispatch of Extra 1644 with slow orders, and the dispatch of symbol freight SK-5 and SK-7.

    West Mill out.

So much happening on the N.Y.C.T.L. in preparation for dispatching those three outbound trains. I appreciate your awareness of the prototypical slow orders for the bulkhead flat loads of logs which makes the ops so much more interesting! Sad to note the Penn Centrals own "day of infamy" but HO mating worm railroading will go on!

    Rock Ridge Yard Out!

The crews in Terminal yard had their hands full and made it happen for both railroads. The APRR will be ready for the inbound train from Selkirk to arrive in Weehawken. Based on manifests posted, the APRR will have 3 crews at Weehawken to bring the freight to Rock Ridge.

It’s still sad to read how the Penn Central collapsed on this day 50 years ago. We get to keep the spirit of the Penn Central alive in our virtual op sessions. Long live the Penn Central in our hearts and minds!
