Penn Central Car Movements #74 / NYCTL Part 1

Greetings All,

Welcome to Penn Central Car Movements #74!!

P.C.C.M. #74 will be another three layout virtual op with my N.Y.C.T.L. exchanging freight cars with
1:1 Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific RR and
PC Ralph's Kings Port Division.

Of note on this date fifty years ago the 1:1 Penn Central was denied a loan of $200 million by the U.S. Government. This would have dire consequences for the railroad, it's shareholders and the nation.*

We open up P.C.C.M. 74 at the Penn Central Terminal Yard with  yard engine 6718 working on the L.I.R.R. interchange and Empire City freight traffic brought in and covered in the two pre ops.

Gondolas of scrap, empty Evans breadbox cars and a load of silica sand in a covered hopper get blocked for dispatch to the Kings Port Division.
BAR 7574 loaded with Louis Sherry ice cream is headed to the Atlantic Pacific RR.
Empty AP and LI hoppers are shoved into a block of similar cars making up the next mine run.
Three EBRR and three APRR reefers are shoved into Terminal Cold Storage for their P.C.C.M. loads.
Empty EL boxcar #73510 is shoved onto the head end of the mine run.
A short time later train MR-1 leaves Terminal Yard for Hudson Coal and T&R Gravel.
First stop is T&R Gravel to exchange empties for loads.
Being pulled from T&R Gravel will be four Penn Central PS-2 covered hoppers loaded with locomotive sand for the APRR engine terminal.
The loaded PS-2s are shoved into Hudson Coal.
AP 9416 is spotted for its next P.C.C.M. load of gravel and EL boxcar #73510 is spotted for its first P.C.C.M. load of bagged iron ore for the new Port Owen Brick Company on the K.P.D.
The MR-1 GP20s couple back up to the empty coal hoppers.
MR-1 shoves back into Hudson Coal.
The caboose has coupled onto the PS-2 hoppers and the pulling of loaded coal hoppers begins. I was happy I remembered this move!
The last of the loaded coal hoppers get pulled.
The MR-1 engines and empties start their runaround move from the Bedford Secondary to the Mainline.
The GP20s shove the empty hoppers back towards Hudson Coal.
The empty hoppers are spotted.
The GP20s have coupled back onto the loaded hoppers and prepare to head back to Terminal Yard.
The Mine Run returns to Terminal Yard and the loaded hoppers are brought over the weigh in motion scale.
We'll cut it here for today with the GP20s cut from the train and  parked in the engine terminal for service and their next call to duty.
We'll pick it up tomorrow starting with some yard work and the dispatch of the Bedford Turn, PC Train BT-27.

Be sure to follow the action on
1:1 Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific RR and
PC Ralph's Kings Port Division.

* On June 19th 1970 the US Department of Transportation notified the Penn Central that a guaranteed $200 million dollar loan would not be forthcoming after a lot of political and administrative maneuvering.

The guaranteed $200 million dollar loan was to be made by the Department of Defense under the Defense Production Act and Congress was to then approve a $750 million dollar loan to the Penn Central relieving the D.O.D. of the guarantee.

This unusual set up was put in motion by the Nixon Administration that had many creditors and Penn Central investors in their ranks and as supports. The scheme fell apart when a Texas Senator made a fuss and threatened to subpoena many involved.

Thanks for reading!!!
See ya tomorrow!!

    Rock Ridge Yard Out!

Excellent start to P.C.C.M. #74! Nice to see the PS-2 covered hoppers being loaded with sand as the Richmond Hill Engine Terminal is down to their last load!

It’s sad to read what happened to the Penn Central. That put the final nail in the coffin for them. However, we make the Penn Central live on!!

Acknowledge dispatch of MR-1 and movement of cars for the KPD.

    West Mill out.

Very nice start to the series with all of the Hudson Coal and T&R Gravel moves. Thanks for highlighting the first iron ore move to Port Owen Brick! You are an excellent PC historian even though today's anniversary was a sad one for fans.
