Penn Central Car Movements #96 Part 1 / The Gathering Begins

 Greetings All,

Welcome to Penn Central Car Movements #96!!!

Time flies when running model trains and it's hard to believe we are well into our seventh year of virtual operations!!! Our 96th virtual op will once again feature PC Ralph's Kings Port Division and Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific RR interchanging freight cars with my New York Central Layout.

We open up at Bedford Park Yard with engineer Robert R reporting for work with ex NYC Alco RS1 #9909 assigned. Ex PRR RS1 #9921 worked very well in PCCM 95 and this week an ex NYC unit will do the honors.

Robert R starts his work day pulling empty PC boxcar #160502 and empty RI boxcar #35062 from All City Storage.

The PC and RI boxcar are placed in Bedford Park Yard to be cleaned and held for local PCCM loading.

Next stop is American Hardware Supply to pull a pair of empty APRR boxcars for movement to Terminal Yard and prepping for their next PCCM loads.

Robert R is now working the Ford Plant and coupled up to empty EBRR boxcar #503827 that is going back to IDEAL Auto Parts in Rock Ridge NJ.

Also being pulled out of the Ford siding are empty NYC and PRR 86' boxcars going to ACME Auto Parts in Mayfield NY.

Robert R gets clearance to proceed to Terminal Yard as Train BP-12.

Train BP-12 heads for Terminal Yard.

Fill er up Willie!!! With no auto parts cars to rush back to the Bedford Park Ford Plant Robert R takes the time refuel and replenish his RS1.

A short time later a pair of RS2s just out of the shop are on the ready track as Alco Joe reports for Train BT-27.

Train BT-27, the Bedford Turn, leaves Terminal Yard.

Alco Joe gets busy at his first stop, T&R Gravel, pulling four loaded PC PS2 covered hoppers loaded with locomotive sand for the APRR's Richmond Hill Engine Terminal (RHET).

Also being pulled from T&R Gravel are NYC boxcar #47062 and EL boxcar #73510. Both are loaded with bagged iron ore pellets for Port Owen Brick in Port Owen NY.

Alco Joe puts the BT-27 back together.

Alco Joe brings the BT-27 into Bedford and passes University Millwork with seven empty PCCM boxcars (3 B&M, 4 TP&W)

Train BT-27 rolls into Bedford with six additional PCCM cars.

The BT-27 starts working the Bedford Industrial Siding and couples up PC boxcar #229036 at Berk Enterprises. The car is loaded with printed labels for Van Winkle Canning in Bloomberg NY.

Alco Joe pulls seven empty PCCM cars from University Millwork. The three B&M RBLs are in assigned service out of Merrimack NH and will be heading back their. The four TP&W cars are IPD (Increased Per Diem) cars and their broker has arranged for PCCM loads at Consolidated Grocery Distributors in Terminal Warehouse.

The switch work here is done.

The Bedford Turn heads towards the Schaefer Brewery.

Now working the Schaefer siding loaded non PCCM P&E boxcar 3575 and empty PCCM boxcar TP&W 627 get pulled from the brewery.

Empty IC boxcar #30130 is spotted at Neubaum's Coffee & Tea Importers for its next PCCM load. There may have been some chicanery with this car as it was originally held in Terminal Yard for movement to be loaded in Empire City at the request of the Empire Belt RR. Looks like the PC agent overrode that to satisfy a PC customer.

With the switch work done Alco Joe chats with the Bedford Towerman while they await clearance for him to take the mainline for his runaround move.

LIRR Train MA-3 passes Bedford Station on the main as Alco Joe fights congestion to get back to Terminal Yard.

The Bedford Turn returns to Terminal Yard. In the background Train BP-41 is getting ready to depart for Bedford Park Yard with non PCCM freight cars.

We'll cut it here today with Kar Knocker out to inspect the inbound trains from Bedford and Bedford Park as the Yard Job starts pulling off the cabooses.

We'll pick it up tomorrow in Empire City with LIRR Train MA-3 arriving at North Side Yard.

Be sure to follow the action on Ralph's Kings Port Division and Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific RR.

Thanks for reading and watching!!!
See you tomorrow!!!

  1. Congratulations on your 7th year of virtual operations! I'll have to say that the 96th virtual operations chapter has begun with great interest! As for the Alco RS-1, as well as the S-2, I have always liked the sound of their 539T prime mover. I would describe the sound as a combination of turbo whine and, for lack of a better description, a type of chirp.

    1. Thank you very much Robert! We've enjoyed the seven years of virtual ops and I really appreciate that you follow along and take the time to comment. 1:87 scale Robert R continues to be a vital player in the PCCMs!😉 The aptly described Alco sounds are like music to the ears!

Another great start in the 7th year of virtual ops! I’m glad to be part of these incredible moves we do. Your selection of engines on this part is classic. Bedford station seems to be a major focal point on your railroad as most of not all of the moves pas this location. I like the Mail & Express train that is heading to Selkirk. Expanding our virtual ops that take us to another location makes our moves more realistic. Great work Sir John!

Thank you for the compliments 1:! Sir Neal!!! Both Ralph and I were very happy to have the APRR join the virtual ops early in there formation. The PCCMs have grown and continue to evolve bringing continued enjoyment to the participants and hopefully those that follow along. Thanks for being a big part of it!!

I'm sure local fans around Bedford Park Yard enjoy the varied locomotive assignments for local work and at the head of BP-12! Alco fans are especially pleased by the RS-1 and RS-2s. BT-27 became a sizeable freight, continuing a recent theme of long trains and busy railroading. Hmmmm...a little PC favoritism may explain why IC #30130 wasn't moved by the EBRR as originally scheduled! I enjoyed the train meets with the Mail & Express, the NH powered manifest, and the highballing MA-3! We're off to a great start with this series!

Thank you very much 1:1 PC Ralph!!! I've enjoyed these past seven years of virtual operations and interchange with the KPD and KP&W. Our modeling and layouts have benefitted greatly and I appreciate you be a willing co-founder to interchange freight cars from a thousand miles away w/o having the trains leave our respective basements.
