Penn Central Car Movements #80 / N.Y.C.T.L. Part 3

Greetings All,

Welcome back to Penn Central Car Movements #80!!

Follow along as the P.C.C.M.'s enter their fifth year! This virtual op is a three layout affair with my N.Y.C.T.L. interchanging freight cars with PC Ralph's Kings Port Division and Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific RR.

Grab a hot drink and put on a warm sweater. The cold winter winds are starting to blow.

We open up my final outbound installment with PC Ralph notching up the throttle as he eases Train EB-2 out of North Side Yard.

EB-2 heads across the the Empire City viaduct.

PC Ralph brings the train thru Bedford

EB-2 rolls into Terminal Yard.

The A-B-B-A consist is cut from the train and heads into the engine terminal.

Always a class act PC Ralph finds space for his engines adjacent to a public street for railfans to easily photo the classic consist while he waits for space at the fuel and sand racks.

Meanwhile Big Mike pulls off the EBRR caboose as Kar Knocker prepares to blue flag and inspect the train.

Kar Knocker has cleared the EB-2 freight cars and Big Mike pulls the consist into the yard to sort it.

PC 142770 going to 3 Amigos Warehouse in Rock Ridge NJ gets shoved into track #3.

The outbound cars have been placed in their respective trains. Big Mike shoves three PC RBLS and an EL Reefer down track #8 to work the yard limit industries.

The empty HRC 40' boxcar gets pulled from Terminal Warehouse and Cold Storage for it's next P.C.C.M. load.

An Empty EL 57' reefer gets spotted for it's next P.C.C.M. load. The trio of PC RBLs will remain here until the next move is completed.

Big Mike pulls a pair of EBRR covered hoppers from the Pier 16 Grain Silos loaded with grain for the Rock Ridge NJ Cargill Plant.

The EBRR covered hoppers are shoved into the Rock Ridge Yard train

Big Mike has retrieved the empty PC RBLs and places them for the Pier 16 switcher to spot at Bruce Electric Equipment.

A short time later the Pier 16 switcher spots the three PC RBLs for their next P.C.C.M. loads.

Remember the mention of the cold winter winds? A large snow storm blanketed the Penn Central and shut down Selkirk for three days on December 25, 1969. (That was a white Christmas!). The bitter cold temps caused train lengths to be reduced by 50% to maintain legal pressure.

Division Superintendent I.D. Shore has called for short and frequent trains to run thru the division to keep the tracks clear due to more snow and cold temps on the way.

The power has been called and coupled on. F7A #1693 is assigned to Extra 1693 (Terminal Yard to Selkirk). F7A #1862 is assigned to Extra 1862 (Terminal Yard to Selkirk).

Assigned to the all Flexi Van Mail Train are a tired and worn out E7A and E8A.

The snow begins to fall....

The Flexi Van Mail Trains rolls out of Terminal Yard

Extra 1693 is on the move. Next stop Selkirk!!!

Extra 1862 is on the move. Next stop Selkirk!!!

This concludes the N.Y.C.T.L.'s outbound portion of P.C.C.M. 80. We'll shovel out and reconvene this coming Friday with the inbound portions.

Be sure to catch the action on PC Ralph's Kings Port Division and Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific RR.

Thanks for reading and watching!!!
See ya soon!!!

  1. Hi John! A great series as always. I certainly like seeing the FA's in action. I can imagine the distinctive sound of those Alco prime movers in my mind.

    1. Hi Robert!! Thanks for the compliments! Those FAs are nice runners. I gotta tell you if I had the cash a four unit set with accurate sound really would be something I'd like to have. Thanks for following along and commenting! John

Acknowledge dispatch of EB-2 to Terminal Yard, dispatch of Flexi Van Mail Train, Extra 1693, and Extra 1862.

Acknowledge winter storm and need for shorter train lengths.

    West Mill out.

Fantastic wrap up of the outbounds on he N.Y.C.T.L.! Lot of train action and a special ops response to the weather! The videos made cold! Brrrrr! I remember that Christmas storm! The smoke exhaust just made it look colder! Lots to see in this installment: great looking trailers on flatcars, nice collection of custom made EBRR covered hoppers, impressive big E Units rolling out the mail, and F units at the head end of trains out of Terminal Yard! I'd just bundle up a little more so I could keep hanging around the yard to see more! Terrific pics and video coverage!

    Rock Ridge Yard Out!

Nice finish to the outbound! Looks like 1:87 PC Ralph got a workout with train EB-2 today. The EB/NYC Alco units in the classic ‘Cigar Band’ look fit them well, a nice touch to those engines! Both Extra 1693 and 1862 in the snow looked impressive. The crew of the APRR will be at the ready to receive the inbound freight from Selkirk.
