P.C.C.M. 62 / NYCTL Part 4

Greetings All,

Welcome back to the P.C.C.M. 62 series!

The NYCTL opens up it's inbound portion of this three layout virtual op with Sir Neal's APRR and PC Ralph's KPD today. Last weekend we worked on dispatching our freight cars either off layout or made intralayout car movements to facilitate future virtual ops car loadings.

We open up with Penn Central Train HP-4 (Selkirk to Terminal Yard) led by a pair of EMD SD35s rolling across the Empire City High Line. Train HP-4 features freight cars from the APRR and a block of NYC empties for added tonnage heading to Terminal Yard.

HP-4 Passing Bedford Station.

HP-4 arrives at Terminal Yard.
The SD35s have cut from HP-4 and head into the engine terminal.
The Yard Job gets right to work on the HP-4 freight cars.
Empty coal hoppers from R.M.O. Electric in Rock Ridge NJ are shoved into track #6 to make up the next Coal Job.
Two APRR orange 40' boxcars that are heading to Bedford Park are placed on track#5. The EBRR 40' boxcars are going to Empire City and are spotted on track #4.
Following HP-4 and rumbling thru Empire City towards Terminal Yard is Train LI-2 (Selkirk to Terminal Yard) featuring cars from the KPD.

LI-2 passing Bedford Station

LI-2 lead by pairs of GEs and EMDs arrives at Terminal Yard.
LI-2's power heads into the engine terminal.
The Yard Job gets to work on the LI-2 freight consist.
The cars going to Bedford Park are being blocked on track #5.
Freight cars for Bedford industries are blocked and combined with the Bedford Park cars.
The Yard Job is now blocking cars for the Empire Belt RR that serves the Empire City industries.
Included in the Empire City transfer train is this block of cars that will be interchanged with the L.I.R.R. at the Empire Belt's North Side Yard.
Last but not least this trio of T.O.F.C. cars from Williams Yard are shoved up track #8
and spotted at the Terminal Yard T.O.F.C. track
We'll cut it here today with the motive power for the three local outbound trains that will be dispatched from Terminal Yard coupled on and ready to go. Engine Hostler, 1/87th scale Wet Willie, was definitely in a New Haven state of mind!
However, the Terminal Yard Trainmaster is apoplectic! "Willie I told you I wanted these oddball NH units out of here ASAP"! They're leaving on the next trains out replies Wet Willie. "Yeah, but the trains are local turns you knucklehead!" They'll be coming right back!!! Oh...
We'll pick it up tomorrow with the dispatch of the Coal Job and the combined BT-27 / BP-41 working Bedford and Bedford Park. Be sure to catch the action on the APRR and KPD!!

Thanks for reading and watching!!!
See ya tomorrow!

Rescue Attempts

This post is from 2017.
For whatever reason it was reverted to a draft so I'm reposting it.

Greetings All,

As a long time model railroader I've collected trains from many sources and different manufacturers. Some were purchased, some were gifts and some were much better than others. In my early days the old Kaybee Toys was selling Bachmann freight cars at 5 for $10.00. This was before the EZ mate couplers and the Bachmann Silver Series. I bought a bunch. All cars had talgo mounted X2F (horn hook) couplers and plastic wheels of dubious quality.

As time went on a lot of these cars were upgraded with body mounted knuckle couplers and metal wheels. Some of the cars however went into what I call the purgatory box. Some were stored serviceable and some were waiting for divine intervention to help them join their peers on the layout. One of these cars was NYC 499043, the A.H.M. heavy duty flatcar that I recently covered in this blog entry. http://newyorkcentrallayout.blogspot.com/2016/09/ahm-nyc-499043-heavy-duty-flatcar.html

Based on the success of that project I dug into the purgatory box to look for other freight cars I could return to revenue service. I also expanded the search to other rolling stock that was being largely ignored for whatever reasons. Let's take a look at some of the my most recent rescue attempts

Two Bachmann gondolas from the Kabee Toys days. Both need to receive body mounted couplers and better wheels. Both have been weathered to some degree in a prior attempt to get these cars into service.
Two more gondolas from Bachmann and a Recycled Steel gondola which I believe is a Model Power product. I painted the inside of the P&LE and CBQ gondolas awhile ago. These two come under the category of largely ignored. Probably because of their bright colors they just never seemed to get the call when gondolas were needed.
A Model Power Gulf Gasoline flatcar and the P&LE gondola from the above picture
A TYCO A.T.S.F. flat car that has had it's wood deck painted. Both the Gulf car the A.T.S.F. car have received new brake wheels and assemblies courtesy of leftover Athearn parts.
Disappointing steel coil loads from Walthers that I purchased a few years ago. Put them together and put them into a box where they seldom if ever saw the inside of a gondola. Below I'm spray painting them at
the N.Y.C.T.L.'s outdoor Paint Shop known as the Patti-O to try and improve their appearance.
P&LE car has been weathered with Doc O'Brien's weathering powders from Micro-Mark to tone down the green and give it a more realistic appearance. This looks promising when compared to the CBQ car. Both cars already have body mounted knuckle couplers and metal wheels. These two cars were featured in a prior blog entry in 2013;
Weathered P&LE car with with painted and weathered steel coils.
CBQ car has painted steel coils. Banding colored black with a Sharpie Marker.
The weathering powder was flying and all three cars are now done. The SR gondola received body mounted knuckle couplers and some better wheels.
CB&Q gondola is looking much better to me
One SR gondola is now in revenue service
The N.Y.C.T.L. has added three decent looking gondolas. The improved steel coils fit into the cars nicely
TYCO A.T.S.F. flatcar with new brake wheel and slightly weathered now in revenue service.
The second Southern gondola and the Gulf Gasoline flatcar are still in the N.Y.C.T.L. shop. Management is hopeful they can be returned to revenue service in the near future.

P.C.C.M. 62 / NYCTL Part 3

Greetings All,

Welcome back to the P.C.C.M. 62 series!!!

Let's wrap up the NYCTL's outbound portion!

We're at the Empire Belt Railroad's North Side Yard in Empire City NY where EBRR train EB-2 is preparing to depart for the short run to parent road Penn Central's Terminal Yard behind two EBRR GP30s and an EMD leaser.

1/87th scale senior engineer Sir Neal who basically runs the day to day operations at North Side Yard wishes PC Ralph a safe trip with EB-2 and a reminder that the leaser needs to go back to EMD.
EB-2 has come over the Vanderbilt Bridge and made the turn at Bedford Tower. Tower Operator 1/87th scale John B is out to give EB-2 a roll by inspection and checkout the GP30 in demo paint.
1/87th scale PC Ralph is rattling the windows of Hostess and the apartments behind it as EB-2 roars towards Terminal Yard.
EB-2 rolls thru the tunnel into Terminal Yard.
1/87th scale PC Ralph has cut off from the freight cars and brought the engines into the Engine Terminal. Maybe he'll cut the leased GP30 from his engine consist. Maybe he won't.😇
The Yard Job gets to work on EB-2.
Cars for Elkhart, West Mill and Rock Ridge yards are being sorted.
Two AP RBLs, a PC boxcar, three EBRR boxcars and a gondola are in the Rock Ridge block so far.
Empty PC boxcar 360063 will get put into the next Bedford Turn for it's next PCCM load in an upcoming intralayout move. Cool! I've been waiting for this three layout car to cycle to the NYCTL for several months and am in no hurry to see it go back in the box for another couple of months.
Another block of cars for West Mill get shoved into place.
The Morton Salt covered hopper going to Morton Salt in Rock Ridge NJ brings up the rear of the Rock Ridge block being shoved back to couple up to the West Mill block to make up PC Train NV-3 that will travel from Terminal Yard to Selkirk.
Cars for Elkhart and the Ralston Creek RR makeup Train LS-1 that will travel from Terminal Yard to Elkhart via Selkirk.
LS-1's power has coupled up and it's time to go!

LS-1 heads thru Bedford towards Empire City & Selkirk

Next stop Selkirk!
Back at Terminal Yard the power for Train NV-3 (Terminal Yard to Selkirk) couples up to PC boxcar #360508 that is headed for Marcal Paper. The two white AP 50' RBLs were loaded in PCCM 61 at Ralph's Grocery Warehouse with foodstuffs for C&P Restaurant Supply. Both industries are located in Rock Ridge NJ.
The big pawed six axle power brings NV-3 out of the yard.
The Kar Trak reader and the watcher have recorded PC boxcar #360158 bringing up the rear of the West Mill block as LS-1 leaves the yard.

NV-3 passes Bedford Station

Next stop Selkirk!!!
That wraps up the NYCTLs outbound portion of PCCM 62. The inbound portion will begin next weekend.

Be sure to follow the action on
Sir Neal's APRR and PC Ralph's KPD.

Thanks for reading and watching!!
See ya soon!!

P.C.C.M. 62 / NYCTL Part 2

Greetings All,

Welcome Back to the P.C.C.M. 62 Series!

The action starts with 1/87th scale Big Mike and Robert R working the 292 job at the newly relocated and mocked up Pier 16 Grain Silos.
Over at Terminal Yard the Yard Job is pulling these three empty AP covered hoppers that came in on yesterday's Train BT-27. The YJ will shove them up on track 8 for the 292 to pick up.
The 292 has the three empty AP covered hoppers and two empty EBRR covered hoppers in tow as it heads thru the switch towards the Grain Silos under the watchful eyes of 1/87th scale Robert R.
The 292 shoves the five empties into track 2 to await their first virtual ops loading at the Pier 16 Grain Silos.
Later that morning Train EC-1 departs Terminal Yard for North Side Yard with some big six axle power including a leased EMD SD45. This consist was inspired by this PC prototype photo.
EC-1 arrives at North Side Yard and 1/87th scale Big Mike steps out of the cab of SD45 #6190 to greet the surprised EBRR trainmen. Hey's where's Alco Joe? No Alcos, no Joe replies Big Mike with a wink. Besides, I'm senior man over there and I'm breaking in the new guy so I took the run.
EC-1 couples up to it's caboose to prepare for departure as Big Mike shares words of wisdom with conductor trainee Robert R on why they are leaving without any freight cars. Listen kid we bring them cars, they bring us cars. That's how it works and it keeps everyone working. We'll be going back caboose lite with this sorry excuse for a caboose so get ready.
1/87th scale Robert R enjoys the views and the breeze from the back of the ex NYC transfer caboose wondering what all the fuss is about. These cabooses are cool! So is the 10,200 HP pulling it!!
With EC-1 out of the way 1/87th scale Senior Engineer Sir Neal gets to work with the Morning Industrial Job.
The MIJ is at Gervais Pipe and Fitting picking up EBRR gondola #509823 loaded with pipe for Shapeless Steel in Rock Ridge NJ.
The MIJ has shoved back to Ralph's Grocery Warehouse to pick up empties PC 360063 and EBRR 358160.
1/87th scale Sir Neal has brought the MIJ into midtown and conductor John is directing the pick up of these GN and NYC Early Bird boxcars.
1/87th scale Conductor John has read the switch list! Empty EBRR boxcar #358160 just pulled from Ralph's Grocery Warehouse is spotted at Neal's Lumber & Hardware for it's next PCCM load.
Still in midtown the MIJ has pulled this Hoschton Railway RBL from Empire Produce with a load of fresh produce for Van Winkle Canning in Bloomberg NY.
This empty NYC Early Bird boxcar just pulled from Neal's Lumber & Hardware is spotted at Prestage Gear for it's next PCCM load. The MIJ crew is firing on all cylinders this morning.
1/87th scale Sir Neal has brought the Morning Industrial Job to the south side of the city and is now shoving back to work the west side industries.
PC 77047 loaded with burlap bags for Hedberg Aggregates in Marion NY is picked up from Moore & Company.
Next stop is Neubaum's Coffee & Tea Importers to pick up IC boxcar #30130 loaded with imported tea for Cavendish Fine Foods in Mayfield NY.
1/87th scale Sir Neal has shoved the MIJ back to Drywell Inks to pick up Rock Island boxcar #35062 loaded with 55 gallon barrels of ink for the Catskill Mountain Press in Bloomberg NY.
Using the Rock Island car as a handle the MIJ pulls this CB&Q boxcar loaded with furniture for American Furniture in Denver CO from Superior Furniture.
The Morning Industrial Job has finished its work and heads back to North Side Yard.
1/87th scale Sir Neal brings the MIJ into North Side Yard and gets a roll by inspection from PC Ralph and his trusty brakeman.
We'll cut it here for today with 1/87th scale PC Ralph and EBRR Train EC-2 getting ready to depart from North Side Yard for Terminal Yard with a leased EMD engine in the consist.
The NYCTL's outbound portion of PCCM 62 will conclude tomorrow with the dispatch of trains LS-1 and NV-3.

Be sure to follow the action on
Sir Neal's APRR and PC Ralph's KPD.
