Greetings All,
Welcome back to Penn Central Car Movements #97!!!
Our annual Holiday Coal Operations which feature coal train movements across the Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific RR and PC Ralph's Kings Port Division and my NYCTL continues today.
Day Two
We open up at North Side Yard with conductor John announcing we have work!!! The PC has requested as many empty coal hoppers as we can send getting PC Ralph and Sir Neal out of their lounge chairs.
1:87 Emery photos the yard from his favorite vantage point atop Empire City Produce.
Train EB-2 rumbles thru Bedford, NY.
After coupling up to their caboose for the return trip to North Side Yard PC Ralph, Sir Neal and conductor John checkout the mishap at the TOFC ramp. Looks like the crane operator put a loaded trailer down on the landing gear instead of the wheels causing the landing gear to collapse. It happens sometimes!
Train CJ-1 departs from Terminal Yard.
The Coal Job starts pulling the loaded hoppers from Hudson Coal.
The wreck train has been called and passes Bedford Tower as the CJ-1 power burbles away on the Bedford Park Yard lead. That's none other than Alco Joe at the throttle of the 1728 making the run back to to the Terminal Yard engineers pool district.
Here comes the wreck train!
The four derailed hoppers are loaded and pulled from the mainline.
Extra 5693 West brings the upright hoppers towards Empire City and the Empire Belt RR's North Side Yard.
The delayed trains are on the move.
The wreck train engines are recrewed and get ready to head to Terminal Yard to turn the crane and tender and drop the derailed hoppers.
We'll cut here for today with the Wreck Train heading to Terminal Yard.
We'll pick it up tomorrow in Terminal Yard with our final installment.
Be sure to follow the action on Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific RR and PC Ralph's Kings Port Division.
Thanks for reading and watching!!!
See you tomorrow!!!
Wonderful photo's here John. Outstanding modeling.

Emery the railroad photographer got a lens full today! Great action with the continued movement of coal hoppers for this special op! FAs on the head end of EB-2 are always a welcome sight! Unexpected action as the trailer hits the ground hard and collapses AND as CJ-1 derails! Not a great thing for the railroad or Superintendent Shore but we railfans love seeing the wreck train and Big Hook! North Side yard is not done with the coal op yet as the exasperated crewman observed! I enjoyed the train meet with BP-41 and watching the delayed passenger train and ML-15 roll by. Those loaded auto carriers are amazing! Looking forward to more tomorrow!

DeleteThank you Ralph!!! You get the creative credit for the trailer hitting the ground! When the derailment actually happened it was going to be the 0-5-0 crane to speed things up but then I remembered your comment about it being a sign of model railroading integrity to call out the wreck train after a derailment. So you get creative credit for that as well!

Now that was an interesting set of events! The EB crew taking care of that derailment did a great job clearing out the area so trains can move. I think there should be an investigation into this accident. Did Emery catch any of the derailment? I’m sure the NTSB and STB would want to see some photos! I did like the passenger train that headed thru Bedford, some classic cars on that train!
Nice work Sir John!

DeleteIt certainly was an interesting day on the layout with the derailment and getting it cleared with the wreck train!! An investigation was conducted and the fault was found to be heavy coal hoppers with one equipped with a track cleaning pad being pulled by empty ones around the curve resulting in the string lining of the empties.
