Penn Central Car Movements #97 / Holiday Coal Operations Part 1

 Greetings All,

Welcome to Penn Central Car Movements #97!!!
The Annual Holiday Coal Operations

PCCM 97 is our annual Holiday Coal Operations which will feature coal train movements across Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific RR, PC Ralph's Kings Port Division and my NYCTL.

This three layout virtual op will focus on getting loaded coal trains north to Selkirk for further movements to Mechanicville for interchange with the B&M and dispatch to the Bow, NH power plant and the big guy at the North Pole.

Day One
We open the action at the Penn Central Terminal Yard with three ex NYC GP7s ready to take a short Train CJ-1 known as the coal job to Hudson Coal.

Train CJ-1 departs Terminal Yard.

The Coal Job, train CJ-1, stops for the rear brakeman to throw the switch to access Hudson Coal. The new EB tower operator looks on.

The CJ-1 starts pulling the loaded coal hoppers.

The loads are pulled.

Back in Terminal Yard Train UB-2A, a loaded unit coal train for the Bow, NH Power Plant that connects with the B&M at Mechanicville, NY is ready to depart with an FP7-F7B-FP7 consist. During their PRR/PC careers the FP7s were quite at home pulling and pushing  coal trains.

PC Train UB-2A heads for Selkirk.

The Coal Job passes Bedford Tower as it makes its runaround move.

With only eight empties on hand to be delivered to Hudson Coal Division Superintendent Shore has put out a call for empty hoppers and is waiting for their arrival to continue servicing the coal mine.

The Coal Job, now Train CJ-2, has finished its work at Hudson Coal and is back together on the Bedford secondary track being held for Train URN-1A, an empty hopper train off the B&O RR (or BINO).

Train URN-1A comes thru Bedford NY.

The URN-1A power arrives at the fuel pad. The B&O run thru power sure looks sharp in the engine terminal.

Train CJ-2 returns to Terminal Yard with a train of black diamonds.

The Coal Job power is spotted at the sanding rack. Engine hostler Wet Willie in the lower right corner is already sweating because he'll have to turn the B&O/PC F7s so the PC F7 can lead on its next train.

Big Mike working the Yard Job with a trio of Baldwins is pulling the cabooses as Kar Knocker waits to blue flag and inspect the train.

While the trains are being inspected Big Mike builds an outbound unit coal train on track #2.

Several hours later the loaded hoppers from the Coal Job are placed in the outbound coal train. The empties from URN-1A make up a full coal job on track 3 and a partial coal job on track 4. We're gonna need more empty hoppers!!!

Alco Joe gets called for the next train out and stops at the Mingo Jct rock for luck hoping he'll score an Alco set for what may be his last PCCM train of the year. C'mon Santa I've been a good 1:87 engineer this year!

Well, look at that!! An Alco set has mysteriously appeared on the ready track. Wet Willie has no idea where they came from. A Christmas miracle or Festivus miracle you decide. There are reliable witnesses in that VW Bug!! What a way for the 7608 to make its PCCM debut!!

We'll close it out here with Extra 7608 departing Terminal Yard for Selkirk and beyond.

We'll pick it up tomorrow at North Side Yard as the Empire Belt RR answers the call for empty coal hoppers.

Be sure to follow the action on Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific RR and PC Ralph's Kings Port Division.

BTW that Mingo Jct. rock is actually a piece of brick from the Mingo Jct. roundhouse courtesy of 1:1 Alco Joe. I believe this is its PCCM debut.

Thanks for reading and watching!!!!
See you tomorrow!!!

A great opening to the Holiday Coal Op on the N.Y.C.T.L.! I've always liked the three Geep consist that tends to haul the coal jobs! The exchange of loads and empties and loads at Hudson Coal is a terrific op to follow! The unit trains reinforce our appreciation of the late Engineer Ed's proclamation that "there's nothing like a coal train!" Nice run-bys in the videos. We can all use a little Holiday Magic so I'm glad Alco Joe got his RS11 for Christmas; a fun way to introduce the latest addition to the N.Y.C.T.L. fleet! That little chunk from the Mingo Jct. warehouse is a nice artifact! Let the coal trains roll!

    1. Thank you very much Ralph!!! The three GP7 are ex NYC units that were purchased by the NYC with dynamic brakes for coal service so I tend to keep them in that role as I too like the way they look on the Coal Job.

    Rock Ridge Yard Out!

Now that’s what I call coal moves! Those geeps pulling the loaded coal hoppers looks like they were pushed to the max with that tonnage. Those B&O engines do look nice at the fueling racks. I’m sure Wet Willie and his crew will turn them around quickly. Nice way to introduce PC 7608 with witnesses! Wet Willie has nothing to be ashamed of. He should be happy with more motive power. This gives him some breathing room at the engine terminal so service engines without having to rush. So many engines to choose from!!
