Welcome back to Penn Central Car Movement series #73!!
This three layout virtual op with PC Ralph's Kings Port Division and Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific RR interchanging freight cars with my N.Y.C.T.L. continues today with a mine run and short turnaround.
We open up at Terminal Yard with 1/87th scale Alco Joe assigned to train MR-5, the Mine Run, with NYC GP20s for power. Kar Knocker has given the OK that the train is good to go.
Train MR-5 passes T&R Gravel with four empty PC PS-2 covered hoppers sent from the APRR Engine Terminal.
The GP20s pull a pair of loaded hoppers from T&R Gravel.
The cars from T&R Gravel are shoved into Hudson Coal where MR-5 will work next. Hmm...
The four PS2s are spotted at T&R Gravel to be loaded with locomotive sand for the APRR.
Now coupled back up to the empty coal coppers the GP20s pull onto the Bedford Secondary to clear the Hudson Coal switch.
Aha!!! MR-5s caboose couples up to the T&R Gravel cars and then pulls them out with the loaded coal hoppers ensuring the caboose will be on the rear of the train for the return trip.**
The last of the loads are pulled from Hudson coal.
The long train of empties and loads stretches out on the Bedford Secondary.
1/87th scale Alco Joe has the GP20s shoving the empties back towards Hudson Coal on the main.
Empties to be filled for RMO Electric and Corning Glass Works are spotted for loading.
1/87th scale Alco Joe has MR-5 back together and starts heading back to Terminal Yard.
The turbocharged GP20s easily drag the loaded cars up the grade.
MR-5 returns to Terminal Yard and is crossing the weigh in motion scale.
The next train out of Terminal Yard is short turnaround BT-27, the Bedford Local. Engineer 1/87th scale Robert R will be officially qualifying today on BT-27 under Big Mike's tutelage.
BT-27 rolls along the Bedford Secondary and approaches the Hostess Plant where they have work to do.
First move is to spot this Hostess covered hopper loaded with flour from the large Cargill Plant in Rock Ridge NJ.
Second move is spotting PC boxcar #360158 loaded with bagged flour from Blue Ribbon Flour in Kings Port NY.
Fulfilling an empty car request the next move is to spot this HRC 40' boxcar at Heileman Brewery for its next P.C.C.M. load.
The guys are lined onto the main and stop to chat for a minute with the Bedford Tower man. Looks like the freight cars for Bedford Park are backing up with Robert R on a training day.
After a quick runaround move and a long pause by Big Mike inside the Hostess Plant BT-27 starts back to Terminal Yard.
We'll cut it here today with BT-27 back in the yard and 1/87th scale Robert R now officially qualified on BT-27. Big Mike has wiped the powdered sugar from his hands to give Robert R a big pat on the back.
We'll pick it tomorrow with the first of two trains going to Empire City, Train EC-1, getting dispatched from track 2.
Be sure to follow the action on PC Ralph's Kings Port Division and Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific RR!
** I've been trying to incorporate T&R Gravel and Hudson Coal car movements into a single Mine Run for years. I always had trouble with getting the outbound T&R cars into proper position with the Hudson Coal outbound cars and caboose until today. That simple move eluded me for a very long time.
Thanks for reading and watching!!
See ya tomorrow!!

The nicely done PS-2 covered hoppers look great on the mine run and I also like the LIRR hopper which I do not recall seeing before! GP20s are always a favorite! Clever ops move to have the caboose couple to the cars being pulled out of the mine in order to combine work at Hudson Coal and T&R Gravel! Sometimes great ideas take time! "A long pause by Big Mike inside the Hostess Plant..." Love it! Seems to be a theme as Neal mentioned engineer Steve getting food at C&P Restaurant Supply! I'm sure Big Mike found something good at Hostess! Congrats to Robert R. for qualifying!
10-4 West Mill...
ReplyDeleteThank you for the wonderful compliments Ralph!!
I really enjoyed the run! Thanks John! Thanks for the congrats Ralph! Yes, I have come to realize that Big Mike has a great appreciation for good food such as pirogies and also sweet treats like what is made at Hostess.
ReplyDeleteGlad you you enjoyed it!! As always thank you for watching and commenting. Your 1/87th scale namesake has been doing a stellar job on the layout!

That LIRR hopper is very impressive, I like the look on this hopper car. BT-27 at Hostess is one of my favorite spots on the railroad. I see some Geeps at the ready with an AP engine on the rear. The mine is a nice addition in its own right. Servicing coal, gravel and other rocks, like ballast will add to more operating scenarios.
10-4 Rock Ridge!
DeleteThanks for the compliments Sir Neal!
The LIRR hopper was purchased at a Long Island Train Show a long time ago from a vendor selling custom painted LIRR equipment.
Thank you for the GP20 centric P.C.C.M. segment!!! 1:1 and 1:87 scale Alco Joe really enjoyed the time with the GP20's on the mine run. That's cool you were able to workout the train movements between T&R gravel and Hudson Coal. Glad to see Robert R. and Big Mike take care of the Hostess run. Your GP20, GP7 lash up looks nice together!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the compliments Brian!!! 1:87 Alco Joe continues doing excellent work in train service no matter what engines we saddle him with! I'll keep the GP20s "available" knowing their significance.
