Rainy Day Op Session

Greetings All,

With the local weather being rain, rain and more rain I took advantage an opted for a train day.

I put together a freight train of 26 cars with random destinations around the layout for an impromptu rainy day op session.

A PC power lash up of a U30B-SD45-GP7 did the honors.

The inbound train has arrived at Terminal Yard, been inspected and released. The Yard Job's U23C 6718 gets to work on the consist.
A P&LE boxcar, some empty gons and other freight cars are shoved into track #3 for later delivery to the Empire Belt RR.
The 6718 couples up to a group of inbound freight cars.
The U23C has dropped a block of cars at the Pier 16 Yard and heads back to Terminal Yard.
A block of six cars from the inbound train are spotted at Terminal Warehouse & Cold Storage.
The U23C shoves empties from Terminal Warehouse & Cold Storage into track #5 for a later outbound train to Selkirk.
Next we head over to the Pier 16 Yard and see a block of the inbound freight cars waiting to be worked.
A newly established "Transfer Job" prepares to leave the Bruce Electric Equipment lead to pick up the block of inbound cars.
The Transfer Job heads to the 12th Ave running track to drop cars at local meat packing industries. The Baldwin S12s working today are track cleaning cars.
With the Transfer Job gone the Pier 16 Yard Job gets to work pulling a block of empties from the Pier 16 Grain Silos.
After completing their work the Yard Job holds on the Pier 16 Silos track 2 as the Transfer Job returns with a block of empties.
The empties are shoved into a yard track.
The Transfer Job now works the Empire Power Authority pulling empties from the coal track. I just found out the low profile of the S12 allows it to enter the shed to retrieve the empties.
While the coal empties are prepped for departure the Yard Job gets to work on the empties that were just dropped off.
The Yard Job pulls the empties and will shove the loads to the Transfer Job waiting to our left.
The empty / loads swap is complete and the loads are shoved into the Empire Power Authority coal track.
A short time later the Lehigh Valley comes off the 12th Ave running track to drop off four cars.
Newly established procedures have foreign road transfer runs dropping their trains in the Pier 16 yard confines.
The Yard Job grabs the LV cars while LV engine idles out of the way. 1/87th scale union agreements allow the cars behind the LV white RBLs to return with the LV switcher back to their West 27th Street yard.
With the freight cars now ready for their proper destinations the Lehigh Valley SW8 shoves back past the switch to access the 12th Ave running track.
The LV heads to 12th Ave and their West 27th Street yard and that wrapped up the Pier 16 Yard op for this rainy day.
Back at Terminal Yard the crew is ready for their next inbound train to start the ops cycle again.
And here it comes led by F7A 1693 plus four.
I took a break from the operations here as the sun made an appearance and it was a good time to get out of the house to see it and enjoy it. The rainy day ops were a pleasant way to pass the time on yet another rainy day.
I'll need to get the yards and layout ready ASAP as I will be participating in a two layout virtual op this weekend with PC Ralph's Kings Port Division

Thanks for reading and watching!!!
See Ya Soon!!!

  1. Nice way to enjoy a rainy day! Having an op session solo is just another way to enjoy the layout. Your Switchers do get a workout, especially at Pier 16. It's really amazing how that industry came to fruition and what it adds not only to the op session, but to the overall layout.

Having interchanges with the LV just adds more work (in a good way) to the railroad.

Awaiting to see what the next addition to the N.Y.C.T.L. comes to be!

  2. I know it would be a major project, but one of the good points for JMRI operations is that there's always the option of running a switchlist for a train. It's a little silly but I always get the feeling I've accomplished something when I terminate a JMRI switchlist! As always, those colorful vintage cars, clean and well maintained, look good on your layout.

    1. Thanks for the compliments John!! I've started to input some info into something called E.M.R.I. I'll send you a private message to talk about that.

  3. A great way to spend a rainy day and to have more fun with the new ops involving transfers from the 12th Ave running track and all of the switching opportunities at those large industries near Terminal Yard! Didn't you get the memo that Empire Power Authority designed that loading bay to accommodate the S12? :)

    1. Thanks Ralph!! You're right it was a good way to spend a rainy day. I think art was intimidating life regarding the S12! I remember the famous Ironton S12 being traded to the LV for an EMD SW unit and the EMD roof would not fit into the Ironton train shed.
