P.C.C.M. 52B

Greetings All,

We're running a special two layout virtual op this week with Ralph's K.P.D. layout. Following my blog post about the cheapie gons and PC Ralph inspired homemade scrap loads Ralph and I came up with the following scenario to feature gondolas and homemade scrap loads on both of our layouts.

Here's the storyline, Kings Port Steel is running low on scrap steel for their Basic Oxygen Furnace

Gershow Recycling in Medford NY which was served by the
L.I.R.R. and now the N.Y.&A. has answered the call.

Empty gons have been pulled from Kings Port Steel

and gathered at Williams Yard to be sent on their way in PC Train WV-2 to Selkirk.

The gons ended up in Train LI-2 that runs from Selkirk to my Penn Central Terminal Yard. Once at Terminal Yard the empties will need to be delivered to the Empire Belt RR at North Side Yard where the E.B.R.R. interchanges freight cars with the L.I.R.R. who service Gershow Recycling.

Let's check it out...

It's Sunday night and weekend trackwork has detoured PC Train LI-2 to the passenger main towards Empire City Station. Today's train features some vintage New Haven power that came into the PC stable in 1969.
LI-2 passes the City View Apartments
Some late evening train travelers enjoy the mix of freight and passenger trains running thru the station.
LI-2 leaving Empire City Station.
Plenty of empty gons from Kings Port Steel and a familiar VW from Kings Port NY.
New Haven caboose C-681 brings up the markers
LI-2 climbing the grade near Ralph's Grocery Warehouse as it chugs along towards Terminal Yard.
It's 10:15 PM and LI-2 arrives at Terminal Yard .
The Yard Job makes quick work of sorting out LI-1 freight cars.
Newly painted F7A 1862 with a GP30 couples onto the empty gons. They'll run the empties over to Northside Yard as Train EC-1 which is the morning transfer freight from the Penn Central's Terminal Yard to the Empire Belt RR's Northside Yard in Empire City.
EC-1 with 14 empty gons leaves Terminal Yard.
Looks like a familiar figure is running EC-1 today! He must be on the Extra OT Engineers Board
Another familiar figure making some big bucks this weekend gives EC-1 a roll by inspection as it passes Bedford Tower.
EC-1 arrives at Terminal Yard. Looks like the PC employees have been encouraged by PC Ralph to show some company pride!
Having dropped the empty gons EC-1 has reclaimed it's caboose and heads back to Terminal Yard as Train EC-2.
Later that day the Long Island Railroad is seen at Bedford Station making their daily run to North Side Yard.
The L.I.R.R. comes thru the west side towards Hohman Ave
The L.I.R.R. freight train arrives at North Side Yard on track 2.
The L.I.R.R. completes the interchange by pulling the empty gons and their caboose for the trip back to Bliss Yard.
We'll cut it here today with the empty gondolas heading towards Gershow Recycling in Medford NY which is off layout.
Tomorrow the gons will return loaded to the layout and be dispatched towards Selkirk and Kings Port Steel.
Thanks for reading!

  1. A very busy weekend crew gets the job done! Excellent work on the railroad. The gondola moves look like a new staple to our P.C.C.M. virtual ops..

  2. Very enjoyable segment with some different equipment and routings. I like the crewmen manning your new F unit. I’m with Sir Neal. I would be game for a “scrap” themed PCCM. Empties and loaded gondolas traveling coast to coast. Nice looking PCCM to get Kings Port Steel some needed material for their furnaces.

  3. A great read for train fans as the NH units make an appearance. Remarkably the Kings Port Railfan Society managed to be in the right place at the right time for once, although they seem to be getting some scrutiny from the E.C.P.D.! Nice highlighting of the visible crew in the new F unit heading EC-1 with its mixed consist. All this and the always welcome appearance of the L.I.R.R.!

    1. Thanks for the compliments Ralph!!! The K.P.R.S. guys seemed to be doing OK so far even though they are currently under police scrutiny. It was nice getting the NH units out of the box and showing some of the layouts lower level.
