Penn Central Car Movements #90 / Part 6

 Greetings All,

Welcome Back to Penn Central Car Movements #90

The PCCM 90 virtual op with my NYCTL layout interchanging freight cars with PC Ralph's Kings Port Division continues today with part three of my inbound portion.

We open up today at Terminal Yard with the dispatch of Train EC-1 to the Empire Belt RRs North Yard. The EC-1 takes traffic for Empire City industries and Long Island RR interchange. On the headend is a pair of Alco FA1s rebuilt by GE for the LIRR as "power cars".

Train EC-1 rolls out of Terminal Yard.

EC-1 gets a highball and roll by inspection at Bedford Tower. The LIRR power cars had their traction motors removed and will provide electrical power for the coaches and cab control for the LIRR push pull operations.

The EC-1 rolls into North Side Yard as the EBRR crew inspects the train and checks out the new Alco power cars heading to the LIRR.

It's none other than Alco Joe and conductor Murray working todays EC-1. Below they check in with the EBRR guys, deliver the waybills and movements cards and chat about the first "power car" move.

The EC-1 engines couple onto the caboose and head back to Terminal Yard long hood forward and caboose lite as Train EC-2.

After getting the waybills and movement cards in order the EBRR crew gets North Side Yard in order.

With the yard in order the Morning Industrial Job heads onto the Empire City Secondary Track.

Once again PC Ralph is working the Morning Industrial Job and will switch PCCM and non PCCM cars from the Empire City industries.

First stop is Gervais Pipe & Fitting to pull out KP&W #2140 and MCRR #350623 gondolas loaded with pipe for the Hudson Valley Ag Co-Op.(HVAC)

With the siding clear a NYC Early Bird boxcar loaded with kitchen gadgets from REVCO is spotted at Ralph's Grocery Warehouse.

A pair of Evans coil coaches loaded with coil steel from Kings Port Steel are spotted at Gervais Pipe and Fitting.

The Morning Industrial Job heads west.

NYC boxcar #80775 spotted at Moore & Co. in the outbound portion of PCCM 90 has been loaded with bulk carboard for Canton Box in West Mill NY and gets pulled from the siding.

With the siding clear the NYC Pacemaker car sans hobos and loaded with barrels from ACCO is spotted at Drywell Inks along with empty RI boxcar #35062 spotted for its next PCCM load.

PC boxcar #77047 is spotted at Moore & Company for its next PCCM load.

The west side switching is done and PC Ralph heads back to the east side.

P&E boxcar #3638 loaded with bricks from Port Owen Brick is spotted at Neal's Lumber & hardware under the direct supervision of Sir Neal Himself.

We'll close it here today with PC Ralph has tying down the MIJ on the secondary track.

We'll pick it up tomorrow with Sir Neal getting the yard in order for the interchange with the LIRR and turn the op over to the LIRR to close it out.

Be sure to follow the action on PC Ralph's Kings Port Division!!!
Thanks for reading and watching!!!
See you tomorrow!!!

    Rock Ridge Yard Out!

Alco Joe and Murray worked Train EC-1/EC-2 in record time, so it seems. They delivered the train to North Side Yard with those new LIRR ‘power cars’. Something tells me we may be seeing an LIRR passenger revenue train in the not so distant future?

Of course, no MIJ job would be complete without Ralph handling the moves around Empire City. Great work Sir John!

    West Mill out.

The former FA1s turned into LIRR power cars make an interesting move. Great way to get them on the rails! They are very eye catching for 1:1 and 1:87 scale fans alike! It seems like EC-1 was a little longer today with more cars than usual for the LIRR. The horn on EC-1 in the video sounded great! I see the EBRR is still "borrowing" that Penn Central Geep! Lots of work for the MIJ on both sides of town. Nice job setting up moves for the next PCCM. Looking forward to the LIRR's involvement tomorrow as always!

    1. Thanks Ralph!! The Long Island RR interchange traffic was heavy coming out of West Mill! Add couple of local cars going "east" and the train becomes quite substantial.

    2. Another fine ops! With my own layout in hiatus l feed my ops cravings vicariously through you guys. I even imagine what industries on my pike would do business with yours.
As I mentioned before I always learn something new from y'all. I had never heard of a power car before,at least not from a converted F unit. I'm familiar with B units for steam heat. Now I wonder if they provided electric and traction too? I always believed they were regular 'B's with steam generators added. Were these power cars unique to the LIRR?
BTW: Love the paint job on the RS1 (?). ....Still learning my diesels!

    3. Thanks Mark!! When your layout is back in business our industries would enjoy doing business with your industries!

The LIRR Power Cars were mostly Alco FA units with a couple of EMD F units added to the mix. The cars were rebuilt by GE and provided power control from one end of a push pull passenger train with a diesel unit on the other side. The power cars had their traction motors removed but retained their prime movers. These units provided cab control, head end power for heat and light but could not propel the train. These units did not have steam generators and they were indeed unique to the LIRR.

The LIRR RS1 is painted in what became known as the Worlds Fair scheme for the 1964 Worlds Fair at Flushing Meadows Park in Queens NY which was served by the LIRR.
