The action continues today with P.C.C.M. installment 40K. That is a cool sounding number! Let's pick it up at Bedford Park Yard...
A New York Central FM H16-44 is this week's power at B.P.Y. Management at the N.Y.C.T.L. continues the practice of assigning non EMDs to B.P.Y. so as not to offend anyone at the Ford Plant.
The B.P.Y. crew pulls two loaded auto racks from the Ford Plant.
and these two empty 60' auto part boxcars.
The engine shoves back and the train couples up to the caboose. The train will now head to Terminal Yard as train BP-12.
Train BP-12 rumbles thru Bedford NY.
Where it meets Train NV-3 headed for Selkirk with that 5 unit lash up that came in earlier on Train VN-4. The Terminal Yard trainmaster is following the time honored practice of sending out exotic power on the next train leaving the division. At this time the PC had only a handful of FAs and FBs.
With NV-3 out of the way BP-12 climbs the grade behind Hudson Coal towards Terminal Yard.
BP-12 arrives at Terminal Yard and is headed into track 3.
The TY switcher gets right to work on BP-12 pulling off the caboose.
The TY crew has pulled this NYC 86' boxcar that originated from West Mill on train WV-2 and coupled it up to the BP-12's caboose to facilitate a quick turn around for the Bedford Park Yard train.
Meanwhile the auto racks are shoved towards the under construction Terminal Yard extension. The cars are placed on an out of the way track to combat vandalism and theft which was a growing problem for the open rack cars.
The FM H16-44 has coupled up to the NYC 86' boxcar loaded with auto parts from ACME Auto Parts in Mayfield NY. Air pressure will build quickly with this train and after a quick terminal brake test they'll be under way as Train BP-41 in no time.
BP-41 makes it's way past Bedford Station on it's way to Bedford Park.
Back in the tight environs of Bedford Park and B.P. Yard the engine has uncoupled from the 86'er and does a run around move.
NYC 67086 is now shoved into the Ford Plant and spotted at door 2
That's it for today. Stay tuned for the upcoming installments.
Thanks for reading!
Peter Lynch's color illustrated "Penn Central Railroad" features an auto parts move just like that(page 104), describing it as a "rightaway" needed NOW by the auto plant. Terminal Yard and BP-41 crews performed an efficient job getting the 86 footer quickly to Ford. Always a pleasure to see the auto racks and thanks for anther look a that beautiful five unit FA&B consist in the meet with NV-3.
ReplyDeleteI need to check out that PC book if it can still be found! Can't let the Ford Plant stop production due to delays at Terminal Yard! Glad you liked the encore of the FA-FB consist!
DeleteFirst, I apologize as I didn't catch the background change. I was more focused on the report. I love the way you took the pic of BP-12 climbing up the grade with Hudson Coal in the foreground. I think that's a great photo! I'll have to go thru my book on the Penn Central to see if I have that book as well!
ReplyDeleteNo apology necessary 1:1 Sir Neal. Glad you enjoyed the blog post and the BP-12 photo behind Hudson Coal. The background was recently repainted and the newly upgraded coal hoppers in the foreground add a lot to the composition.
