Catastropic Engine Failures

The New York Central shop forces at Terminal Yard were hard at work this week after two out of three NYC GP30s came limping into the yard with an express intermodal train. The GP30s are custom painted Spectrum Units and are assigned in a three unit lash up to the hottest freight trains into and out of Terminal Yard.
The diesel mechanics quickly found that both units suffered from loose flywheels and that one unit, in addition to the loose flywheel, was suffering from other engine woes that caused the overload circuit breaker to trip repeatedly. Both units had their flywheels cemented and one unit was able to return back to service the following day. The third unit, the one with the most problems remains out of service awaiting a new engine to arrive from Bachmann.
