Rolling Stock Odds and Ends

Greetings All,

The NYCTL Purchasing Department was busy over the last few weeks between ebay and the annual Autumn sale at my LHS.

From EBAY:

A pair of Roundhouse two bay covered hoppers that came with horn hook couplers and metal wheels. The cars are good renditions of the PC H34 and 860H two bay hoppers. They will be stripped and painted as such down the road.
A Walthers TrainLine Gulf tank car for virtual ops usage. This car came with plastic knuckle couplers and metal wheels. Kadee #5s replaced the plastic knuckle couplers. This car made its debut in P.C.C.M. 65.
Also from EBAY is this Proto 2000 52'6" drop end mill gondola painted as PC subsidiary P&LE #41919 with a PC herald. It's coupled to an older P&LE NYC subsidiary gon.
The gon was apparently shopped and painted at the P&LE McKees Rocks Shop in March 1968, one month after the Penn Central came into existence. Note the circled S in front of the road number.
From the Canada Southern website: The circled S is believed to be an old NYC designation and have two possible meanings. #1 would be that this is a System car that would be at home anywhere on the Penn Central and it's subsidiaries. #2 denoted a maintenance group that basically determined the limit of expenditure for repairs.

From the Local Hobby Shop
From my L.H.S. is Life Like brown box Erie two bay covered hopper #4065. This car was new in the box for less than $3.00 and I couldn't pass it up.
I've cut off the talgo mounted couplers, have added body mounted Kadee #5s and Intermountain metal wheels. The Kadee coupler box is attached to the car with CA.
A Kadee 2-56 nylon screw is inserted thru the box and the coupler box lid is held in place with a 2-56 nut. The end of the screw was cut off with a razor blade and the nut is painted black.
As mounted the coupler matched the Kadee height gauge perfectly.
The metal Intermountain Wheels worked extremely well for this car. Here is the all important roll test;

The Erie covered hopper reports a 1312 cubic foot capacity for hauling fly ash from the power plant.
The new Erie covered hopper joins two similar CB&Q LL cars that have been on the roster for many years and were upgraded with body mounted couplers and metal wheels many moons ago.
The Erie and CB&Q cars should get some decent run time going from the NYC / PC served E.P.A. to Terminal Yard.
Being transferred to the Empire Belt's North Side Yard.
Where the car will be interchanged with the Long Island RR and forwarded to one of the many cement plants on Long Island.

Thanks for reading!!!
See ya soon!!!

    1. Thanks Ralph! The IM wheels really worked well for the Erie car. The roll test is an important part of my rolling stock upgrades. If the car rolls really well it will be wobble free.
