P.C.C.M. 45H

Greetings All,

The P.C.C.M. 45 series has reached the N.Y.C.T.L. This four layout virtual op features 1:1 AT JOE joining in his first virtual op action posting installments 45B and 45C. Welcome aboard Brian(his real name)!!

Here's how the 45 series started;
P.C.C.M. 45A: A.P.R.R. Rock Ridge Yard RO-1 to Weehawken                                Weehawken to Selkirk via PC Train WV-2
P.C.C.M. 45B: C.B.&Q. 31st St Yard in Denver to Chicago
P.C.C.M. 45C: C.B.&Q. Cicero Yard to PC 59th Street Yard
P.C.C.M. 45D: WV-2 arrives at West Mill on the K.P.D.
P.C.C.M. 45E: WV-2 meet Extra 8150 at Kings Port
P.C.C.M. 45F: PC and K.P.&W. interchange & deliver the goods!
P.C.C.M. 45G: Take a run up the KP&W Mountain Branch

Today we'll start with the arrival of PC Train VN-4 (Selkirk -Terminal Yard). Here we see VN-4 holding the main while an Empire Belt train from Terminal Yard heading for North Side Yard crosses over to the inner main.
VN-4 stretched out over the Empire City viaduct. The three 86' auto parts boxcars are from Ideal Auto Parts in Rock Ridge and consigned to the Bedford Park Ford Plant.
VN-4 has gotten the green signal and is moving over the High Line towards Bedford and Terminal Yard. Block one consists of these cars from the A.P.R.R.'s Rock Ridge Yard.
The remainder of the block from Rock Ridge are these four PS-2 hoppers and the three 86' boxcars.
Block 2, starting at the Triangle Pacific boxcar, originated at West Mill and was tacked on to train WV-2 as it made it's way up the River Line towards Selkirk.
Block 2 comes across the EC viaduct with breadbox trough cars and steel slabs from Kings Port Steel. Block 3 is the single Rock Island car loaded with Tivoli Beer from C.B.Q.'s 31st Street Yard in Denver and later transferred to the PC's 59th St Yard in Chicago
VN-4 at Bedford Tower. Tower operator 1/87th scale John B gives the iconic PC engines and train a roll by inspection.
A local rail fan on the Bedford passenger station platform catches the action on video. Perhaps it was 1/87th scale Emery Gulash who's made a few trips to New York to catch the PC in action.
VN-4 arriving on time at 1900 hours at Terminal Yard
VN-4 makes it's way thru the arrival tracks. The string of ore cars on track 5 are IHC products that I've reworked over the years. Check out John Bruce's recent two part blog entry on how he's upgraded these models. Part 1  &  Part 2
The yard crew wastes no time pulling the caboose from VN-4 and getting the train sorted out.
Cars for the Empire Belt RR are shoved into track 7 while cars for local Penn Central trains will be shoved into tracks 6 and 5.
Cars for the E.B.R.R. to deliver to Empire City industries are in place on track 7 and the yard crew is shoving in cars that will be interchanged with the Long Island RR at North Side Yard.
Four PC PS-2 covered hoppers for T&R Gravel to be loaded with sand for the Rock Ridge Engine Terminal and two empty open hoppers to be loaded at Hudson Coal for Corning Glass make up this mineral service train.
The Tropicana RBL will be picked up by the L.I.R.R. along with the steel slab loads for Mid Island Steel. The 86' auto parts boxcars, the two 50' boxcars and the covered hopper will be going out on local PC trains for delivery.
The crew finishes up with VN-4 by spotting these two empty T.O.F.C. flats on the Terminal Yard T.O.F.C. track.
That wraps up today's installment. Next we'll dispatch the PC and E.B.R.R. trains from Terminal Yard and get these freight cars to their respective destinations / interchanges.
Thanks for reading!!!

  1. Nice continuation of the rail action as cars forwarded tot he N.Y.C.T.L. arrive on VN-4!! Lots of freight cars to be sent out in different directions! The Terminal Yard crew has its work cut out for it but Terminal Yard Can Handle It!
    Great looking rolling stock on all tracks! Nice work on the ore jennies and I always like catching the R.I. photobombs!

    1. Thanks Ralph! I like that phrase! The TY crew has gotten much better as the PCCMs progress and they are proving they can indeed handle it. Never know when the Ralph Island cars will pop up!

  2. Agree with Ralph, great looking action and footage from 1/87 Emery. The ore jennies and PC Covered hoppers are really looking sharp! Until Ralph pointed it out, I hadn’t noticed the Rock photo bombs. Nice segment and action on the NYCTL!

    1. Thanks for the compliments Brian! The Route Ralph / Ralph Island cars tend to pop up a couple times every series. This goes back to something like PCCM #1

  3. I really agree on how good AHM ore cars actually look! What did you use for loads on these, and how did you handle the couplers and trucks?

  4. Thanks John! The ore loads are from Walthers. Not an exact fit but pretty close. Cars are divided into 2 four car groups with dummy couplers connecting them to each other and knuckle couplers at each end. All cars have body mounted couplers. The trucks are the original IHC trucks. For a little more check this old blog entry;

    1. Glad you're liking the virtual ops K.K.!! They've been a lot of fun for us. Most of us, including me, are not tech savvy either. See if these are something you'd be interested in participating in. Welcome to the club!
