P.C.C.M. 29G / Dispatch of train EC-1 / EC-2

Greetings All,

P.C.C.M. 29G
Today we'll watch Train EC-1, the Empire City Turn, leave from Terminal Yard, work an industry at Bedford NY and then arrive at North Side Yard in Empire City. The crew at North Side Yard will break down and reorganize the train so that the cars can be forwarded to their respective consignees or interchanged with the L.I.R.R. later in the day. An outbound EC-2 will head back to Terminal Yard with freight cars for the rest of the model railroad world. Let's get started;

Once again the N.Y.C.T.L. will try and spot NYC 892021 at Wonder /Hostess in Bedford NY. The car came back with the Bedford Park Turn after the lead was blocked by a Bad Order (B/O) car.

The Terminal yard switchers are pulling the caboose and NYC 892021 from the rear of train B.P.T. on track 8 under the watchful eyes of 1/87 the scale Sir Neal and PC Ralph.
EC-1 / EC-2 is all class today with AP GP38-2 #358 known as the Sir Neal and PC GP38 7675 aka the Sir Larry as the power.
Train EC-1 meets a transfer run from Cedar Hill waiting for track space in Terminal Yard. The forced takeover of the bankrupt New Haven RR has added some nice color to the N.Y.C.T.L.
Finally! EC-1 spots NYC 892021 at Hostess / Wonder . The PC boxcar on the right had been blocking access to the spot needed. It was repaired and is back in service.
With the cars from Hostess /Wonder behind the engines EC-1 makes it way thru Bedford Station.
Bedford Tower Operator 1/87th scale John B give EC-1 a roll by inspection.
EC-1 on the High Line heading into Empire City and towards North Side Yard.
EC-1 has arrived at North Side Yard and 1/87th scale Sir Neal and PC Ralph exchange pleasantries with today's North Side Yard crew. The new crew is assured that once the Sir Neal and Sir Larry engines head back into the vast PC system they will be back working North Side Yard.
While 1/87th scale PC Ralph and Sir Neal enjoy a fine meal at Dominick's Little Italy Restaurant the North Side Yard crew get busy blocking the inbound and outbound cars and putting train EC-2 together.
EC-2 leaving North Side yard and passing Hohman Ave tower manned by a very proud 1/87th scale Tower Operator Larry D, aka Sir Larry of Flemington. He's happy to see his engine here in Empire City and has resisted the urge to jump aboard.
EC-2 crossing the Empire City viaduct
1/87th scale Sir Neal is feeding her the fuel as he crosses over to track 3. He likes to get a good running start at the grade leading up to Terminal Yard
Climbing the grade into Terminal Yard all 4,000 horses are pulling hard and maintaining a steady speed!
EC-2 engine 7675 is recorded as arriving at Terminal Yard on the newly installed ACI scanner as it heads into track 2..

And if you read this far here's the skinny on NYC covered hopper 892021. I left the switch list at Terminal Yard and simply bypassed Hostess / Wonder and upon arrival at Bedford Park noted the NYC covered hopper on the train. Since I had already photographed a good portion of the action of P.C.C.M. 29F I came up with a plausible reason why that car was not delivered on it's first attempt.
And now you know the behind scenes story. Keep it on the down low....

P.C.C.M. 29F / Dispatch of Bedford Park Turn

Greetings All,

Today we'll redirect our efforts to P.C.C.M. 29F where the Bedford Park Turn will be dispatched from Terminal Yard, work industries as needed in Bedford NY, head into Empire City proper for turning on the West Side and then work the industries at Bedford Park before returning back to Terminal Yard.

The power for the Bedford Park Turn today is Fairbanks Morse H16-44 #7698. 1/87th scale Engineer Ed will be at throttle.
The B.P.T. is leaving the yard as 1/87th scale conductor John mans the rear platform wondering what he did wrong to deserve this crummy crummy.
First stop is Hudson Coal where we'll spot these two ex PRR empty hoppers for loading. The NYC covered hopper is consigned to the Hostess Plant in Bedford NY
The B.P.T. heads thru Bedford Station and crosses onto track 2. We have bypassed the Hostess plant due to a b/o car blocking access.
A fair amount of mail and express is still being shipped on the N.Y.C.T.L. despite the nation wide trends that have this railroad traffic plummeting.
Heading towards the Cornelius Vanderbilt Memorial Bridge we note some Police activity on Market Street at the Ace Cafe.
Heading thru the West Side reverse curve.
1/87th scale Double E has turned the train and we are heading to Bedford Park
Bedford Tower Operator 1/87th scale John B gives us the green signal and has the track lined for us to switch over to track 3
We're shoving back to beford Park Yard
We've dropped the caboose and the NYC covered hopper in the yard and are spotting these three 60' boxcars of Auto Parts from Acme Auto Parts at the Ford Plant.
A NYC 50' boxcar load of appliances from Peerless Appliance is spotted at All-City Storage. The NYC covered hopper should have been spotted at Hostess. A boxcar with a damaged door blocked us from accessing the the spot needed to drop the car off .
We check in at the Bedford Park Yard office and call a carman to respond to Hostess to fix the boxcar.

Leaving Bedford Park with four empty 60' boxcars, an empty Freon tank car from Ford and the covered hopper.
Making our way thru Bedford as we head back to Terminal Yard. That PC hopper to the right of the caboose occupies the spot needed to drop the NYC hopper. The offending boxcar is just out of sight to the right.
The ACI scanner welcomes us back to Terminal Yard.
Thanks for reading!

Penn Central Car Movement #30 / Dispatch of Unit Coal Train UKP-1

Greetings All,

There is a codicil in the Penn Central Car Movement planning documents that allows for the dispatching of unit trains from the receiving railroad to the originating railroad while another P.C.C.M. is in progress. Very simply Ralph originated P.C.C.M. #29. Once the outbound train left West Mill Ralph's K.P.D. would be free and clear of documenting any freight car movements for the week or more it takes for the receiving railroads to complete the series.

So to keep the Kings Port Division's rails shiny and it's crews sharp a unit train will be sent to the K.P.D. today in the form of Unit Coal Train UKP-1 This train originates at Hudson Coal on the N.Y.C.T.L. and is put together at Terminal Yard. The train is consigned to Kings Port Steel and will travel to West Mill via car float.

Those of you who read P.C.C.M. 29D will remember this photo of a unit coal train awaiting a crew at Bedford Station. this was Ralph's tip off to be ready so he wouldn't be sandbagged.

To:        West Mill / West Mill Float Yard (K.P.D.)
              Port Owen Float yard (K.P.D.
Rock Ridge Yard (A.P.R.R.) information only
From :   Terminal Yard
Subject: Dispatch of Unit Coal Train UKP-1

Train: UKP-1
Engines: ex NH GP9 #1218, ex NH RS2 #0503
Caboose: ex NH #0523
Total Cars: 12
Loaded / Empty: 12/0
Origination: Hudson Coal, Bedford NY
Destination: Kings Port Steel, Kings Port NY
Routing: Mainline from Terminal Yard to Port Owen Float Yard. Car Float to West Mill Float Yard. West Mill to Kings Port Steel.

The train crew for UKP-1 boards their lead engine, ex NH GP9 #1218. This train had been spotted here yesterday to open up some track space at Terminal Yard.

Penn Central Car Movement 29E

To:        West Mill (K.P.D.)
              Rock Ridge (A.P.R.R.)
From:    Terminal Yard
Subject: Blocking of cars from train VN-4 at Terminal Yard

Today the Terminal Yard switch crew will break down inbound train VN-4 and make VN-4 into two outbound local trains, EC-1 the Empire City Turn and B.P.T. the Bedford Park Turn.

In P.C.CM. 29D we ended with the Dispatch Sheet from West Mill that shows the 15 cars forwarded from West Mill on Train WMV-5 (West Mill to Selkirk) to the N.Y.C.T.L. via train VN-4 (Selkirk to New York) The 15 cars moved in this series are in the shaded boxes. These are the cars we will work with today.
Using the Dispatch Sheet I've prepared a switch list to build my trains for local delivery and interchanges.

Armed with the newly prepared switch list the Terminal Yard switcher crew gets busy breaking down train VN-4 on track 1 by pulling the caboose and shoving it to the caboose track on track 2
Looks like one train has drawn this beat up cupola caboose spotted on track 8 and the other the more modern bay window caboose spotted on track 9. On track 7 is another unit coal train from Hudson Coal awaiting dispatch.
A minor reshuffle has this block of cars for the Long Island Railroad ready to go with train EC-1
The Bedford Park Turn is looking good as the crew makes a move thru the yard ladder. The covered hopper will be dropped at Hostess in Bedford prior to the train making it's turn on the West Side.
Shoving the cars for Bedford Park into track 8.
Track 9 (bottom) holds train EC-1, the Empire City Turn sporting a bay window caboose. The two heavy steel loads are from Kings Port Steel and consigned to Mid Island Steel in Medford NY. These cars plus the three in front of them will be dropped at North Side Yard for interchange with the L.I.R.R.
Track 8 with the old cupola style caboose has cars for Bedford and Bedford Park. The two PRR hoppers will be going to Hudson Coal for loading. The cars will be sent back to West Mill for forwarding to Corning Glass Works in Corning NY
The Metro Division crews have marked up and are assigned to their trains. 1/87th scale Sir Neal and PC Ralph will be working train EC-1 with GP38s 7675 and 358. No surprise there!
1/87th scale Engineer Ed and Conductor John will be on the Bedford Park Turn with the elderly caboose and this Fairbanks-Morse H16-44 road switcher. An engine that would have about 20 years of heavy freight service under it's belt. Yeesh! Seniority sure has it's advantages here!

Penn Central Car Movement #29D

Greetings All,

Ralph has kicked the N.Y.C.T.L. portion of the P.C.C.M. 29 series my way after the series originated on his Kings Port Division.
http://kingsportdivision.blogspot.com/

Rail traffic for 1:1 Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific Railroad heads in the opposite direction of rail traffic for the N.Y.C.T.L. so any freight cars going to his Rock Ridge Yard will not be covered here. We always send communications and dispatch sheets to each railroad to keep track of our freight cars that are in play. Ralph and I looking forward to Sir Neal's blog getting up and running this way we can report all car movements to readers of any of the three blogs.

Without further ado here is P.C.C.M. 29D;

To:         West Mill (K.P.D.)
               Rock Ridge (A.P.R.R.)
From:     Terminal Yard
Subject: Arrival of Train VN-4 (Selkirk to New York)

It's approximately 1830 hrs this first week of day light savings time and Penn Central Train VN-4 from Selkirk is making it's way thru Empire City over the High Line towards Terminal Yard
An ex NYC caboose bearing the "Road to the Future" slogan brings up the markers.
VN-4 is being pulled by railroad royalty! PC# 7675 aka "The Sir Larry" and A.P.R.R #358 aka "The Sir Neal" get the green light from 1/87 scale tower operator John B at Bedford Tower.
VN-4 meets this idling unit coal train that is awaiting a crew on track 3.
VN-4 passes the coal train's ex NH caboose.
VN-4 at the T&R Gravel Curve and beginning it's climb to Terminal Yard
1/87th scale PC Ralph is giving the trainmen of the Metro Division a quick course on the Penn Central's newest invention, the Kar Trak A.C.I. (Automated Car Identification) scanner. Looks like 1/87th scale Larry D has hopped up on his namesake engine for a ride thru the yard as VN-4 makes it's arrival 1900 hours at Terminal Yard.
The scanner automatically records the car's arrival at Terminal Yard. Check out the build project for this here: http://kingsportdivision.blogspot.com/2017/03/kartrak-aci-on-kings-port-division.html
A Dispatch sheet prepared by 1/87th scale Cappy Foster at West Mill Yard on the Kings Port Division was sent to Terminal Yard prior to the trains arrival. This will be used to block the trains for local delivery and interchange.
