P.C.C.M.60 / NYCTL Part 1

Greetings All,

Our virtual ops group is putting together a four layout virtual op this weekend and the Empire Belt RR has the honor of opening P.C.C.M. 60 for the NYCTL.

We'll start in Empire City at the E.B.R.R.s North Side Yard and catch 1/87th scale senior engineer Sir Neal, PC Ralph, his conductor and conductor John making their plans for the day.

The first order of business is to deliver the Rock Island and Hoschton Railway boxcars to Ralph's Grocery Warehouse. Both cars were constructively placed in North Side Yard at the conclusion of P.C.C.M. 59.
1/87th scale PC Ralph is once again at the helm of these big GEs running the Morning Industrial Job. With thoughts of Big Mike's opinion on the U Boats PC Ralph is humming the song ''Slip sliding away" as he shoves back to the east side industries.
The M.I.J. is working the Gervais Pipe / Ralph's Grocery siding and pulling PC Gon #288673 loaded with pipe for the Hudson Valley Ag Coop via the KP&W Williams Yard.
The M.I.J. shoves back to Ralph's Grocery Warehouse to pull these three empty PC RBLs.
With the empties gone the M.I.J. has spotted the HRC and RI boxcars that were constructively placed in North Side Yard in P.C.C.M. 59.
It's time to work the midtown industries and the M.I.J. will pull this empty BAR boxcar from Empire Produce.
Alright PC Ralph!! Someone's read the switch list today! The M.I.J has backtracked and is now pulling this empty Masonite All Door Boxcar from Neal's Lumber & Hardware. The Masonite car will travel empty back to Ukiah CA for reloading via Reiden Lake on the L.F.N.W.
The M.I.J passes Hohman Ave tower as it hits the west side.
The M.I.J. works the west side industries starting by pulling empty LFNW boxcar #160 from Moore & Company. This car will travel empty back to California via Reiden lake on the L.F.N.W.
L.F.N.W. #160 has been shoved back to Drwell Inks to pull D&H boxcar #19123 loaded with ink for Forley Lithographers in Manhattan Transfer on the L.F.N.W.
D&H #19123 has coupled up to this NYC Early Bird boxcar at Walsh Steel Wool Products.  The car is loaded with mesh for Boom's Ready Mix in Kings Port NY on the K.P.D.
Aha! And there we have it. BAR #5226 picked up empty at Empire Produce in midtown is now spotted at Neubaum's Coffee & Tea on the west side for it's next P.C.C.M. load. Nice work M.I.J....
The M.I.J. heads back towards North Side Yard passing the new Empire City Station.
The M.I.J. has come into North Side Yard via the east side switch and it's time for 1/87th scale PC Ralph and his conductor to break for lunch.
We'll close it out here for today with 1/87th scale Terminal Yard engine hostler Wet Willie still trying to get into ALco Joe's good graces by putting together this four unit ALco lash up for ALco Joe to use on the Coal Job. 1/87th scale Kar Knocker looks on as the tension between the two dissipates.
Tomorrow we'll follow along with the Coal Job and the Long Island RR transfer run and close it out in Part 3 on Monday.

Be sure to checkout the other virtual ops layouts!
may be sidelined due to 1:1 workload

Introducing RA Tower

Greetings All,

I recently bought a Bachmann Plasticville Switch Tower on ebay that was new in the box and being sold as a 'Buy it Now" item for $4.99 with shipping included.

Here is the kit as it arrived.
This kit features simple snap fit assembly.
Here's the switch tower parts after a visit to the Patti-O Paint Shop where I rattle can painted the various pieces.
The switch tower fits very nicely on the lower level where it will be designated as RA Tower.
I decided to call it RA Tower as I liked the sound of it and had plenty of RAILROAD decals left over from my EMPIRE BELT RAILROAD decal sheets. I figured a road and parking area for the tower operator would also enhance the scene.
The road and parking area are in place I'm liking the way the scene looks.
The bulldozer is standing by to remind me to do something with that side of the tower. I like the way the bulldozer looks sitting there so it may be there for awhile.
The familiar VW of the Kings Port Railfan Society has pulled off to the side of the access road and drawn some scrutiny from the tower operator.
Empire City Station is in the distance just past the bridges over the Empire City canal.
A pair of NYC E8As bring a passenger train past the tower towards Empire City Station.
With any luck Benny, Chooch, Easy and T.C. from the K.P.R.S were able to get some decent photos and maybe some video.
The new scene with RA Tower as seen when you enter the train room.

Empire City Station Part 1

Greetings All,

Several weeks ago I visited my LHS to check on their annual winter sale. I came across a used Walthers Bailey Savings & Loan building kit still unbuilt in the box with a very decent price tag plus an additional 20% off. I thought this would be a good candidate for my Empire City Station which lacked such a building so I made the purchase.

Once home I taped the building together and placed it on a piece of plywood that spanned the tracks. The steel columns holding the plywood up are intended for a wedding cake. I bought them about 25 years and three layouts ago.
I tried the plywood at a height even with the upper level. The whole thing at that height just didn't look right so I continued with the scene at this lower height.
The plywood is about 24'' long from left to right with just enough coverage that doesn't totally hide the trains.
A pair of tunnels give vehicular access to the station.
With vehicular access comes vehicle parking so I'm thinking a small parking lot where we see the cars turning in.
After disassembling the building I washed all parts in warm soapy water, rinsed them well and let them air dry. I then put the building together using Bondene from Plastruct. The building was painted with a rattle can gray.
My next step was to apply a mortar wash of one part dark gray, one part alcohol and two parts water. It's subtle and gives the block some depth. The door and widows were sprayed with rattle can gold. I scraped the gold off the frames where it contacts the building walls and again used Bondene to attach the window frames to the walls and window 'glass' to the frames.
I placed some of my more eye catching figures and vehicles in the scene and continued to evaluate it.
One thing that bothered me was the center of the roof has this circle from the manufacturing process that needed to be addressed. BTW the roof is painted a rattle can dark gray with lines from a #2 pencil and straight edge.
Enter this little structure leftover from a Walthers Bralick Building kit that I built and painted to match the station. That looks better!
I continued adding rooftop building details like the chimney and water tank from unneeded parts from the Bralick Building kit that I used as a building flat as seen in my Condos for Sale post. I also lettered the station with some stick on vinyl letters.
I thought the water tower was a little big so I swapped it for this one from a Bachmann Spectrum City Series Building kit.
The large water tank at its new home on top of the Algonquin Hotel
The station is now open for business. The yellow and black cars are stand ins for taxis. Pedestrians and vehicles go about their business including the well known blue & white VW belonging to the Kings Port Railfan Society.
I'm happy with how the structure turned out and its overall size looks proportionate to the scene. The white wedding cake towers have been painted rattle can black and I like the way they look.
Next up is to work on the foam board foundation over the tracks.
The current height of the foam board base will allow loaded tri level auto racks and double stack container cars to pass under it with no issues. The pedestrian bridge in the foreground however limits the double stacks to the rear two tracks.

Condos For Sale!

Greetings All,

I recently had the good fortune to be contacted by 1:1 Sir Neal of the Atlantic Pacific Railroad fame and received an offer I couldn't refuse. You want a Walthers Bralick Building? This was a very generous offer indeed and I had a perfect place for it so I wasted no time in my reply.

Here's The Bralick Building kit box cover from Walthers.
If the picture on the box reminds you of my Superior Furniture industry you're right! The Walthers Bralick Building is an altered Walthers Hardwood Furniture. My Superior Furniture is actually a slightly modified Bralick Building. Walthers also used this basic building for their Heritage Furniture back drop building kit.
The plan for this project is to open up the Bralick Building kit and use it as a building flat here, across from Bedford Station.
The blue painted backdrop is a removable panel that leads to a crawl space. The structures and pictures are taped to that panel. This area was definitely in need of scenic help and I think the Bralick Building will fit the bill perfectly.
Here's the kit opened up and painted. It makes for a 44'' backdrop and I am already thinking this will be a good fit.
New loft apartments across from a train station? Sounds like a good idea to me!
The kits very large windows offer a great view inside the building that I needed to block. I chose to go the colorful drapes route to highlight the building now being refurbished as a mix use commercial-residential structure with some small shops.
From across the room the building with its colorful window treatments is an eye catcher.
The building is up and the condos are ready for sale.
To blend it into the scene and give Bedford the look of a small city I reused some of the backdrop buildings that I printed out many years ago. The brick wall on the lower right takes me to the end of the removable panel.
Some ground cover and a rail fanning pavilion complete the look.
1/87th scale Sir Neal has invited the guys over to check out his new digs and the great rail fanning spot.
A BBQ, some cold beer and this will be the place to be!
The first train to pass the new building is pulled by another all ALco lash up. The PC RS-2, NYC FB-1, NYC FB-1 consist are from the old Life Like Proto series that i've painted over the years.
So far I like the way the new backdrop building has fit into the Bedford portion of the layout.
Once again thank you 1:1 Sir Neal for hooking me up big time.
