Penn Central Car Movements #75 / N.Y.C.T.L. Part 1 / The Outbound Cycle Begins

Welcome to the Penn Central Car Movements #75!!

This will be another three layout virtual op featuring PC Ralph's Kings Port Division and Sir Neal's Atlantic Pacific RR interchanging freight cars with my New York Central Train Layout.

The NYCTL's P.C.C.M. 75 outbound portion starts at Bedford Park Yard and highlights the Penn Central's challenges serving the automobile industry.

1/87th scale engineer Robert R reports for work and surveys the tiny Bedford Park Yard loaded with multiple freight cars for the Bedford Park Ford Plant that were delivered in P.C.C.M. 74 .
1/87th scale Robert R preparing to board the Bedford Park Yard Alco S-4 notes the pair of boxcars at American Hardware Supply that are on his switch list for today as he plans his moves.  
The first move of the day is pulling these empty auto parts cars from the Ford Plant. Both will be heading to ACME Auto Parts in Mayfield NY for another load of auto parts. 
Also pulled out of the Ford Plant siding are these empty KP&W and NYC 60'ers also heading to ACME Auto Parts in Mayfield NY. They are being coupled to the caboose and then the next loaded cars needed for the Ford Plant.
NYC 86'er #67085 and an APRR 60'er #615827 loaded with auto parts from IDEAL Auto Parts in Rock Ridge NJ sandwich LV 50' boxcar #8247 loaded with batteries from Delco in Flint MI. 
The three loaded cars are spotted and the Ford assembly line continues to hum along.

Train BP-12 heads for Terminal Yard

BP-12 heads up the grade behind Hudson Coal.
1/87th scale Robert R brings the train into Terminal Yard.
The four empties for ACME Auto Parts are left on track #1 as Robert R couples up to a set of empty Auto Racks needed back at the Ford Plant. 
Now back at Bedford Park and having uncoupled from the auto racks it's time to deal with the two loaded boxcars at American Hardware Supply. The LV boxcar 66392 is loaded with paint products for Amalgamated Container and PC 272242 is loaded with bulk hardware for Peerless Appliance. 
Several moves later 1/87th scale Robert R has everything in the proper order and heads toward the Ford Plant to deliver the empty auto racks. 
The empty auto racks have been exchanged for loaded ones and Train BP-12A heads back to Terminal Yard. 
BP-12A rolls into Terminal Yard.
More hot cars for the Ford Plant have Robert R and the Terminal Yard guys jumping. Steel coils, gasoline and Freon are the latest non P.C.C.M. shutdown cars needed right away.  
The "rush" cars enter the Bedford Park lead.
Steel coils from Kings Port Steel in non P.C.C.M. gondolas are spotted on the Ford steel track.
A pair of empty Gulf tank cars going to to the Gulf Facility in West Mill get pulled from the tank car track.
After spotting the gasoline and Freon tank cars 1/87th scale Robert R is back switching track 1 at the Ford Plant.
After placing the empties on the industrial track to the left two loaded 86' boxcars get pulled out of the tiny yard.
EBRR 67358 and an APRR 86027 loaded with auto parts from IDEAL Auto Parts in Rock Ridge NJ get shoved into Ford track #1.
It's time for another run to Terminal Yard as 1/87th scale Robert R brings Train BP-12B out of Bedford Park.

We'll cut it here for today with BP-12B rolling into Terminal Yard.
We'll pick it up tomorrow with 1/87th scale Robert R standing by for Big Mike who's running the yard job today to dig out another "shutdown car" needed right away at the Ford Plant.     
Hot Cars. Rush Cars. Shutdown cars. This made Detroit hectic and expensive for the Penn Central with the need for right away one or two car moves to the auto plants. A crew would often have to find and dig out of an arriving train a specific car or await a car's repair at the shop and then rush it to an auto plant.

Hard to believe this is P.C.C.M. 75. It's been a lot of fun and I'm glad to be a part of it.     Bedford Park Yard's Alco S-4 is put through its paces on three runs between Bedford Park and Terminal Yard to accommodate the auto industry! Cars needed "yesterday" are efficiently moved for Ford! Nice work conveying the hectic nature of such operations! Great sound effects on your videos! Wow! 75 virtual ops series under our belts and its still just as much fun running trains across the miles from layout to layout!

  2. Hello John! Another fantastic installment of the P.C.C.M. series on the N.Y.C.T.L.! It's so interesting to see how much operation is actually required out of that small yard in Bedford Park in order to serve the Ford plant as well as the other local industries. Looking forward to seeing and reading more in this new segment of series # 75!

    1. Hello Robert!!! Thanks for the compliments!!!! Serving the auto industry was challenging and expensive for the 1:1 PC and I'm trying to replicate that somewhat in this series.
      This part of the layout has been very challenging to work but
      1/87th scale Robert R continues doing a fine job making it look easy!!!

    A great start as you kick off the 75th P.C.C.M.!! Getting the cars ready for both auto plants and having to get ‘sidetracked’ with a rush move for the Ford plant makes it a typical day on the railroad. The crews are making the moves efficiently and very quickly. A lesson that should have been learned with the 1:1 Penn Central back in the day….
