Another Joint APRR / NYCTL Paint Project

Greetings All,

Once again the NYCTL's Patti-O Paint Shop has been contracted by the Atlantic Pacific Railroad to strip and repaint another group of HO scale boxcars.

1:1 Sir Neal sent down two boxes of train goodies that included  eleven boxcars for stripping and repainting. Here are the eleven after their alcohol bath.
Fast forward a week or so and PC 9999 does the honors pulling the first cars from the shop.
The AP 4035s are pulled out for inspection by 1/87th scale Sir Neal. These are Athearn RTR models with Kadee #5s added.
Next out are the AP 4182s. These are also Athearn RTR models that have Kadee #5s added.
The 4182s are modernized 40' boxcars that have no roof walks and larger doors. The 'return empty to APRR Rock Ridge Yard' decals were created by our late friend Engineer Ed. 
AP 4035 sports an Engineer Ed 'Return Empty to NYC Terminal Yard' decal indicating this car is in pool service assigned to the NYCTL. This also signifies that I've used all the return to Rock Ridge decals.
The four AP boxcars. Each layout will get one 4182 and one 4035 to be used in our virtual ops.
The following day we catch 1/87th scale conductor trainee Robert R in his first model railroad action riding the 8842 into the shop.
1/87th scale Kar Knocker has just released some more newly painted cars from the shop.
A pair of EBRR 416035s are pulled out first. The story on the  416035s is they have had ACI labels added at the shop but retained their older pre jade green paint scheme. These are older Life Like models that have been upgraded with body mounted Kadee #5 couplers and Intermountain metal wheels.
Next out are a pair of EBRR 416079s in the later jade green paint scheme. These are Roundhouse RTR models that have been upgraded with Kadee #5s and metal wheels.
1/87th scale Robert R has connected the air hoses and the cars are  ready to be shoved out of the shop area. The 416079s sport ''When empty return to EBRR North Side Yard'' decals from Engineer Ed.
The newly painted cars are delivered to Terminal Yard.
The new cars are shoved into track #6. The BB B&O GP35 coupled to the hi cube boxcar in the background will be heading to the shop shortly for number boards, electrical work and the painting of the handrails. More on that in a future post. 
A couple of days later the gang has gathered again as a trio of Penn Central 50' boxcars are released from the shop.
 The 9999 pulls out the three PC cars.
The newly painted PC cars are Proto 1000 50' Newsprint boxcar kits with Kadee #5 couplers that were added by 1:1 Sir Neal.
The Penn Central boxcars are shoved into track 2.
The cars have been lettered with Microscale Decal set #87-1095, Penn Central boxcars with NYC style numbers.
 The Yard Job assembles the outbound APRR Special.
PC GP40 #3007 gets the call and 1/87th scale Sir Neal is ready to climb on board..

The APRR Special is on the move!!!

1/87th scale Sir Neal gets the highball from John B at Bedford Tower. Next stop Rock Ridge Yard!!!

  1. The Patti-O Paint Shop once again rises to the occasion! The cars came out great. It's an unusual move since the last car has something that only a handful of railroads had back in the day! The EOT or more commonly known as FRED came into existence in 1969!! First used by the FEC (Florida East coast) is now a staple on all railroads as they did away with the caboose! Thanks again Sir John and the Patti-O Paint team!

    1. Thanks for the compliments 1:1 Sir Neal! Glad you liked the finished products. Interesting tidbit on the EOT / FRED. I enjoyed watching that last car roll thru layout with it's FRED flashing. On the other hand the 1/87th scale Brotherhood of Trainmen has let NYCTL management know they will fight any attempts to eliminate cabooses and/or reduce crew size.

    2. As with many new ways to increase productivity, someone decided to add this to a Penn Central Car prior to being sent to the Patti-O Paint Shop. It seems the 1/87th Brotherhood of Trainman also reached out to APRR management to tell them they stand arm and arm with their brethren at the NYCTL. APRR management has decided once the car is on the property, they will remove the device, pack it up along with the person who decided to add it and throw them off the APRR property forever!
      Long live the Caboose!!

    3. The 1/87th scale Brotherhood of Trainmen salute APRR Management, their wise decisions and their love of the caboose! The NYCTL joins the APRR in the corporate policy of long live the caboose!!! Well said and well done Sir Neal!!!

  2. Great looking Patti-O paint project!!! Nice variations of APRR and EB paint schemes. The D&RC management agrees with the no FRED policy on the rear of their trains.
