Penn Central Car Movement 35I

Greetings All,

Today we'll wrap up the P.C.C.M. 35 series by interchanging freight cars with the Long Island Railroad (L.I.R.R.) at Empire City's North Side Yard. We have two hoppers loaded with highway aggregate from Hedberg's Aggregate in Marion NY that came out of West Mill on Ralph's Kings Port Division and need to get delivered to New York State D.O.T. Region 10 in Hauppauge NY. for much needed road repairs.

For more on the origination of this series check out Ralph's Kings Port Division blog: http://kingsportdivision.blogspot.com/

Let's pick up the action at Bedford NY as the L.I.R.R. transfer train heads to North Side Yard.
The L.I.R.R. Alcos pull the train onto the High Line as they enter Empire City
and travel thru the west side over the Empire City viaduct.
The L.I.R.R. transfer run rolls into North Side Yard
The L.I.R.R. crew has stopped their train on track 2 and the crew exchanges pleasantries with 1/87th scale Sir Neal and his trusty conductor. As always 1/87th scale Sir Neal offers some excellent lunch suggestions but today the L.I.R.R. crew declines citing the need to get the freight cars for the L.I.R.R. back to their yard ASAP. No worries says 1/87th scale Sir Neal, 'we'll get you going right away'
The L.I.R.R. crew has coupled up to the outbound freight cars on track 3.
Meanwhile the N.S.Y. crew pulls the inbound cars out of the yard on the east side.
The L.I.R.R. inbound train included this string of 57' Mechanical Reefers. The N.S.Y. crew will clear that first switch for track 1 to uncouple the L.I.R.R. caboose from the train. They'll shove the caboose into track 1 on the left and then shove the freight cars back into track 2
The N.S.Y. crew has the L.I.R.R. caboose and will tack it onto the rear of the L.I.R.R. train. Note 1/87th scale Sir Neal has left his caboose attached to those inbound freight cars from the L.I.R.R. sitting on track #2. He's on top of his game today as we'll see!
The L.I.R.R. caboose is tacked onto the rear of the L.I.R.R. train on track#3
With the terminal air tests done and clearance to proceed given the L.I.R.R. transfer run leaves North Side Yard with a wave from Hohman Ave Tower Operator 1/87th scale Larry D.
And an assist from the North Side Yard crew who give a helpful shove on the rear.
1/87th scale Sir Neal has cut off on the fly at Walsh's Steel Wool Products. He'll head back into North Side Yard via Hohman Ave. He'll drop the conductor on track 3 next to the caboose and couple up to the cars left by the L.I.R.R. on track 2. With the caboose already at the rear of those cars they'll be ready to work the local industries in no time. I told you he was on his game!
Meanwhile the L.I.R.R. takes the switch for High Line as they head out of town.
Bedford Tower operator 1/87th scale John B gives the crew the highball and the train a rolling inspection.
The L.I.R.R. Alco's lead their train back to their home rails.
And those two hoppers for N.Y.S. DOT Region 10 in Hauppauge NY are on the last leg of their journey that began last week in Marion NY on a layout 1,000 miles away. And today it's Hauppauge here we come!!!
That wraps up the P.C.C.M. 35 series. A special thanks to 1:1 scale Engineer Ed who worked much of the motive power in this series and was a big help getting everything running smoothly. Thanks Double E!

Thanks for reading!

  1. There is not doubt 1:87 Sir Neal brought his A game to the NYCTL for this op. Some fancy footwork juggling that caboose around.

it is always great to see those LIRR Alcos flexing their muscles. Nice photo of them heading back home with a long string of cars. Another entertaining op by all involved in the series. Thx

    1. Thanks for the compliments 1:1 Sir Neal!!! Your 1/87th scale counterpart continues to be an engineer worth emulating. It's great when the senior man can do his job so well and pass on the tricks of the trade to the new guys.

  3. Very efficient work by 1/87th scale Sir Neal! The helper shove on the back of the L.I.R.R. freight was a nice surprise and made for great railfanning at Hohman Ave Tower!

    1. Thanks Ralph!!! I only wish I could make a decent video of that helper shove. It looked that cool running thru the yard and crossing Hohman Ave.
And to quote our favorite radio announcer "Put it in the books"!
